Setubandha Sarvangasana (Bridge Pose) is a gentle backbend that strengthens the legs and glutes while opening the chest and front body.

Rooting down through the feet and gently lifting the pelvis, we create a bridge between the physical and the subtle body. In this space, the spine is supported, the heart is invited to rise, and the breath begins to move with greater freedom.

In our Yoga Teacher Training, we explore how poses like Bridge are not simply shapes to achieve, but experiences to embody. Through alignment, breath, and mindful activation, this asana helps cultivate both strength and receptivity - qualities essential for a sustainable, intuitive practice.

Energetically, Setubandha Sarvangasana resonates with the Anahata (Heart) Chakra, encouraging openness, compassion, and trust in the unfolding of your practice.

Posture is shaped by what we do most often, and for many of us, that means sitting.

When the body stays in the same position day after day, it begins to adapt:

• The chest and front shoulders tighten, gently pulling us forward
• The upper back weakens, making it harder to stay upright
• The hips and hip flexors shorten from long hours of sitting
• The glutes and core - key supports for posture - become less active

Over time, this can create a pattern where the shoulders round, the head shifts forward, and tension builds in the neck and lower back. Even when we try to “sit up straight,” it can feel difficult to sustain because the body has learned a different baseline.

This is where a mindful yoga practice becomes so supportive.

Hatha yoga invites a slower, more intentional approach helping to gently strengthen what’s underused and release what’s overworked.

Here are 5 grounding poses to support that process:

Camel pose (Ustrasana)
Cow pose ( Bitilasana )
