Sometimes we get asked why things don’t feel better after initial treatment for an issue. It’s important to remember that whatever brought you to your knees likely didn’t happen overnight, even though it may seem that way. Repeated patterns of movement, muscle imbalances and/or less than ideal posture can add up over time to put stress and strain on the back, neck and shoulders. Then one day, seemingly out of nowhere things start to hurt.

Those same issues that took time to build up take time to resolve. Your muscles and tissues have gotten used to their positioning, so one treatment will not be enough to “retrain” them back to ideal neutral ground. Sometimes your body actually feels a little worse while things are being fixed. This is normal, as it is being asked to change from what it had settled into.

This is where we hope you TRUST THE PROCESS. Our chiropractors and practitioners will give you their recommendations for care, based on what is happening in your body. Their years of training and experience guide their treatment plans – some issues resolve quickly, and others take a little longer. You may actually feel that things are better part way through the treatment plan and be tempted to end your treatments, feeling like “I’m all better, I don’t need it any longer”. However, the repeated treatments help to create “muscle memory” so that your body doesn’t slip back into old habits, which will cause the pain to return.

If you have questions about your treatment plan your practitioner will be happy to go over things with you, just ask them 😊

Shabina has always been interested in herbal medicine. As a child, her family would always turn to traditional remedies when someone was sick. This led her to formally study Western herbal medicine in 2009. In 2014, she went back to India, where her family is from, to study Ayurvedic medicine and eventually went on to study Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In 2020, she earned her advanced diploma in TCM and acupuncture from Humber College.

She uses acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, diet therapy, and manual therapies such as shiatsu and tui na. Together, these modalities can help address a wide range of health concerns.

In her spare time, Shabina loves to grow and teach about herbs. She tends to a half-acre garden just outside of Guelph.

Sciatic nerve pain, often called “sciatica,” is a type of pain that travels from your lower back down one leg. To understand it simply, think of the sciatic nerve as a long cable that runs from your lower spine, through your hips and buttocks, and all the way down to your foot. It’s the largest nerve in your body. When something presses on or irritates this nerve, it can cause pain and other uncomfortable sensations along its path.

Sciatica usually affects only one side of the body. For example, if the nerve on your right side is irritated, you’ll likely feel symptoms in your right leg. The pain often starts in the lower back or buttock and then travels downward.

The most common cause of sciatic nerve pain is a problem with the discs in your spine. These discs are soft cushions between the bones in your back. Sometimes a disc can bulge or break open—this is called a herniated disc—and press on the sciatic nerve. Other causes include narrowing of the spine (which can happen with aging), or tight muscles in the buttocks, especially a muscle called the piriformis, pressing on the nerve.

If you think you are dealing with Sciatica, our Chiropractors are here to help! To schedule an Initial Assessment you can call the clinic at 519-827-0040 or book online directly at norfolk.janeapp.com

As per the City of Guelph:

Starting the week of March 30th, work will begin to replace and upgrade sanitary sewer and watermain infrastructure along Wyndham Street.

There will be a full road closure on Wyndham Street. Phase 1 of the closure will be from Wellington St. East to Cork Street.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. It is expected that Guelph Transit routes 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 20 will be affected and detoured during construction.

Visit Guelph.ca for more information about bus stop changes and route detours, or any other details about the construction.

Please leave a little extra time when coming for your appointment as detours, closures and possibly heavier than normal traffic on Norfolk Street may make your commute a little longer to get here.

What are the Benefits of Osteopathy?

Osteopathy offers numerous benefits to patients seeking holistic and alternative treatment options:

Pain Relief: Many patients report significant relief from chronic pain conditions after receiving osteopathic treatment. The hands-on approach can help alleviate tension and restore normal function.

Improved Mobility: By addressing musculoskeletal issues, osteopathy can enhance range of motion and flexibility, making it particularly beneficial for athletes and those with mobility challenges.

Enhanced Circulation: Osteopathic techniques promote better blood flow, which can aid in healing and overall health.

Holistic Approach: Osteopathy considers the whole person, including lifestyle, emotional well-being, and physical health, leading to more comprehensive care.

Preventive Care: Osteopathy emphasizes maintaining health and preventing future issues. Regular treatments can help individuals manage stress and improve overall well-being.

Interested in finding out if Osteopathy is right for you? Book a no-charge 15 minute meet-and-greet appointment with either Stephen or Priscila and learn just what they do!
