Taking a GABA supplement for your anxiety? If it works for you - great. But at this point in time, it's not my top recommendation. The research specifically on generalized anxiety disorders is a bit of a ghost town 👻 and with other options that have built up enough evidence to be recommended by national organizations like CANMAT I typically recommend we start with some other choices.

Talking about anxiety and exercise can be a tricky balancing act ⚖️ there isn't a one size fits all answer. Here are some of the things I think about when helping a patient with anxiety manage their exercise.

1. For someone who is stuck behind a desk and favourite hobby is reading 🙋‍♀️ any movement (even walking) is going to help.

2. Increasing intensity of exercise does seem to help more in reducing anxiety symptoms. I call this type of exercise "power pushes" and it can really make a difference in reducing anxiety. (Lets get that energy OUT 🏋️‍♀️)

3. The other side of the coin here is that folks with anxiety (especially if they have what I lovingly refer to as "Anxiety+", meaning there is more than generalized anxiety disorder in their health picture) sometimes become anxious about their exercise and worry about it being perfect, enough or hitting their metrics. In these cases, sometimes less really is more. 💕

Here is what we know:
There is a strong CORRELATION between screen time and anxiety. We know that they "go up together" but we don't know if the increased screen time is causing the increased anxiety or is a symptom of the increased anxiety (or if they are in some fun bi-directional spiral together)

The risk seems higher for adolescents. This is already a sensitive time for mental health. Checking in on how teens feel about their screen use is important.

Not all screen time seems to be the same. Watching a TV show with a friend or having family movie night looks like it has less negative mental health impacts than video games and scrolling social media.

Screen time is a problem when it displaces other health behaviour. Someone reading on their phone rather than reading a paper book is going to be less impactful than watching TV instead of going for a walk or scrolling instead of sleeping.

It does look like cutting back on screen time is a helpful for reducing anxiety. So even if it's not the cause, it may be a helpful behaviour change.

2. Education and Informed Consent
3. Medication or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
