Dimitri lost the root of his nose after being shot on the front lines. He couldn’t wear glasses anymore and was hopeful we could reconstruct his nose to look and function normally again.

Using rib cartilage, I measured the width depth and length of his defect and carved the rib to match exactly what was missing. It was contoured on the under surface to fit the notch neatly, and beveled to be flush with the forehead and the remaining bridge of his nose.

We then excised the scar from his nose and lifted a soft tissue flap from the forehead in order to rotate skin down to cover the graft. Dimitri smiled when he saw his postoperative nose and told me it was better than before.

I can’t wait to see how he heals and is able to carry on with life with a nose that works and allows him to wear glasses.

This is another Andrii. He suffered a blast injury to his left face breaking his cheek and jaw, losing most of his ear and destroying the nerve to the muscles that let him initiate a smile. He had surgery for his fractures and came to us for smile reconstruction after healing for the last 7 months.

Using fascia from his leg as an extension, we rearranged the insertion of the temporalis chewing muscle in the temple, to connect to the mouth instead of the jaw. This allows Andrii to smile volitionally by biting down. This is a life changing surgery that will allow him to return to life with the ability to smile.

Imagine losing your eye and your nose in combat defending your home from invaders. Then imagine coming home and trying to reintegrate in society. This is Andriy and this is his story. We came to help him and those like him. We used rib and forehead skin to rebuild his nose. This is a 3-4 stage procedure. But I am happy to say the first stage went perfectly. This week, Dr. Brace breaks down a common question - “What is a skin pinch lower blepharoplasty?” and explains why it’s rarely needed.

A skin pinch lower blepharoplasty involves removing a small amount of skin just beneath the lashes to tighten the lower eyelid. While it can help in very specific cases, most patients don’t actually have excess skin - they have volume loss and skin laxity that can be treated less invasively.
