Most healthy people can stay hydrated by drinking water, or other fluids like herbal tea, whenever they are thirsty. But you might need to drink more on a hot summer days, or when you’re exercising outdoors during the warmer months.

If you have certain medical conditions, like a bladder infection, for example, you might also need to increase your fluid intake. Older adults may be more likely to experience dehydration and heat-related illness.

Certain medications can also increase your risk of dehydration. Our pharmacist can advise on whether you are at risk.

If you’re frequently hungry, often feel sluggish during the day, and struggle with constipation, you might not be getting enough fibre in your diet.

A diet rich in fibre assists with bowel regularity, lowers cholesterol levels, and helps you feel full. According to Health Canada, women need 25 grams of fibre per day and men need 38 grams daily, but many Canadians only get about half of that.

There’s no way around it, back acne (aka “bacne”) isn’t fun. It can be stubborn and uncomfortable, and can also appear in other places, like on the chest, upper arms, and buttocks.

Body breakouts are mainly caused by overactive oil glands, excess dead skin cells, and bacteria. You can prevent pimples on your body by wearing loose clothing, showering after exercise, and using non-comedogenic body care products (which won’t clog pores).

Cases of strep throat have peaked in recent months. Strep throat is caused by a bacteria and is treatable, but can be serious for young children, older adults and people who have a weak immune system.

Symptoms of strep throat can include:

Severe sore throat that comes on suddenly
Fever
Painful swallowing
Tiny red spots on back of the throat or roof of your mouth
Our pharmacist can advise on whether you should have a strep test to confirm. If you do have strep throat, you’ll need an antibiotic treatment.

If tiny white bumps on your skin are making you feel shy about showing your arms in a tank top or sleeveless dress, you’re not alone.

Up to 40% of Canadians have keratosis pilaris (KP), an often-inherited form of mild eczema that happens when dead skin cells plug the site of a hair follicle. The condition is harmless, but the bumps on your upper arms (or thighs or cheeks) can be a nuisance.

If you are concerned about keratosis pilaris or other skin conditions, our pharmacist can give you advice on how you can take care of it at home and let you know if it’s time to call your doctor.

Conjunctivitis (or “pink eye”) is an irritation and swelling of the eye. It’s one of the most common eye infections in children and adults and can be caused by a few different culprits:

If it’s caused by allergies… both eyes are likely to be red and itchy.

If it’s caused by a virus… eyes may not be itchy, but very watery and have a feeling like there’s something in the eye.

If it’s caused by bacteria… one or both eyes may have crusty or sticky eyelids, particularly first thing in the morning.
