Hemorrhoids are common and occur when the veins in the a**s and lower re**um become swollen and irritated. They can develop for many reasons, including pregnancy and older age. For many people, hemorrhoids can be very uncomfortable.

Winter is coming, and so are eczema flare-ups for many living with the condition.

The itch that often is associated with eczema can be the hardest part of living with the condition. Consider these tips from the Eczema Society of Canada to help calm the itch:

Keep nails smooth and trimmed short to reduce damage from scratching.
Try a cool compress or take a cool bath or shower.
Try to reduce stress as much as possible. Find activities you enjoy and help you to relax.
The use of moisturizer may help to relieve dry skin and itch.

If you roll your ankle during a jog or go too hard on a trail hike and have pain in your ankle, it may be possible that you have an ankle sprain or muscle strain.

Pain, inflammation, bruising and swelling are common signs of most sprains and strains. If you are experiencing these common signs, speak to our pharmacist for advice on how you can manage them and if you should see your doctor.

Even during the coldest months of the year, our skin is still at risk of sun damage. Check out these three surprising facts to help you stay sun safe this season.

1/ UV strength doesn’t significantly decrease from summer to winter. If the sun is shining you are exposed to damaging rays, whether it’s +20°C or -20°C.

2/ The sun’s rays can pass through fog, haze, windows (including in the car) and reflect off snow.

3/ The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to exposed skin daily, all year round.

Cases of strep throat have peaked in recent months. Strep throat is caused by a bacteria and is treatable, but can be serious for young children, older adults and people who have a weak immune system.

Symptoms of strep throat can include:

Severe sore throat that comes on suddenly
Fever
Painful swallowing
Tiny red spots on back of the throat or roof of your mouth
Our pharmacist can advise on whether you should have a strep test to confirm. If you do have strep throat, you’ll need an antibiotic treatment.

A runny nose, body aches, fever, and maybe even a sore throat, too. These are the classic symptoms of the flu.

You can protect yourself, and those around you, by washing your hands often, staying home when you are sick and getting a flu shot. The flu shot can reduce your chances of getting very ill and of spreading the virus to others if you do get the flu.

Got your first nasty cold of the season? That sore throat, runny nose, and/or mild cough is probably going to last one to two weeks.

Although you can be contagious throughout the time you have symptoms, you’re most likely to infect someone else during the first few days. If you can, stay home to rest and recover, and reduce the risk of passing it on to someone else, particularly those around you who may be at risk of complications.

Seasonal dry skin is common. The cooler air outside mixed with warm air indoors and low moisture levels can result in a loss of water and oil from the skin.

Get some relief by:

Keeping showers and baths short, and using warm, not hot water
Moisturizing twice a day
Using a humidifier to add moisture to your bedroom

If you’ve ever had a small fluid-filled blister on or around your lips, you’ve probably had a cold sore.

These blisters are caused by a virus. Although they can be very uncomfortable and unsightly, they are not dangerous, and often heal within a few weeks without leaving a mark.
