Happy 1st Birthday Hallie! ❤️

Welcome to the world little Hallie girl.

You surprised us this week! You decided to come into this crazy world a whole week early! Mommy and Daddy have been preparing for your arrival for months, and I am so happy that they chose me to support them through this journey!

They have all the things they need for you to grow, and Mommy has two whole drawers full of beautiful floral print outfits that she can't wait to try on you! I think you may have to wear them all this week because you are already growing so quickly!

Daddy has been calling you "the kid" for months and told me and Mommy lots of funny jokes while we were waiting for you to arrive! I just know you are going to love him so much (and all his crazy stories!)

Your Mommy worked so hard to get ready for you to arrive. You should have seen how strong and brave she was when you were on the way! Daddy and I were so proud of her and Daddy even said he would change all your diapers in the middle of the night and never complain about pain ever, ever again!

If one day he starts to tell the story about the puck to his foot - just stop him in his tracks and remind him about what Doula Katie said about Mommy! 😉

I went to visit you today before you went home and you fell asleep in my arms and had such sweet little dreams. I was so sad when I left because I felt like I was leaving my family behind. Your Mommy and I have only known each other for a short time, but now all of a sudden it feels like forever ❤️

I just know you are going to have the most amazing life Hallie girl, and please know that I will always be here watching you grow from a distance until Mommy needs me again ❤️

Please remind her and Daddy to send me lots and lots of pictures of all your precious little moments.

Love, Katie ❤️

Our Board made some important change this week!

This is such welcome news for birthing families and the Doulas who support them. After some advocacy work, members of the NSDA board were able to get a policy shift on allowing Doulas as an exception throughput the Health Authority.

The Milk and Micronutrient Assessment Lab (MAMA Lab) from Mount Saint Vincent University is currently recruiting moms and infants for another breastfeeding study.

Our research team, led by Dr. Kyly Whitfield, is seeking to explore feeding interactions between caregivers and their infants who are being fed breastmilk both at the breast and from a bottle. Participation in this study involves recording up to three feeding sessions in the homes of participants. As a thank you, participants will receive $25 per session.

This study has been cleared by our research ethics board, and has COVID-19 protocols in place that follow Nova Scotia Public Health's guidelines.

Experts and advocates say it’s beyond time to change the language around who can get pregnant and give birth, and start using more gender inclusive terms.

It's World Breastfeeding Week! This cool recent study demonstrates that providing access to ergonomic carriers increases the duration of bodyfeeding!

This is a great benefit to highlight for doula clients considering baby wearing.

Being a doula means sticking it out for however long it takes to support your client. And unfortunately sometimes that means a thirty hour labour that ends in a c-section.

Being a doula means dismissing those nagging feelings of guilt because you weren't able to change the outcome for your client no matter how much you tried.

Being a doula means caring for yourself as well. Mentally and physically, not matter what. Aching muscles and a brain that won't stop asking if you're sure you did everything you could have done to support them.

Being a doula means that today I will rest, reflect, and support myself. I will feel grateful for being chosen to support such a wonderful family. I will be thankful for the training and skills that I have acquired to support people that need me.

Being a doula is everything.

Fully vaccinated over here at Sea Sister Doula Company 🤪

Honestly, over the last 16 months I have gone back and forth so many times on whether or not I really felt comfortable getting this vaccine. All the negative things I have seen in the media that weren't true or were spun in a negative way really messed me up for a moment.

It eventually dawned on me that I needed to apply the same EVIDENCE-BASED research practices that I use for my clients to understand this vaccine! That is when I learned the benefits of getting it far surpassed not getting it.

Learning how to do your own research is such an amazing skill to have. Knowing where to find accurate information and knowing how to weigh the risks and benefits is so important.

How do you help reduce stress with a newborn?

Great post! No need to worry about a small amount of spit up if that baby is doing well and not in any discomfort.

Spitting up is common in healthy babies! During the first 3 months, about half of all newborns experience spitting up- when the contents of their stomach come back up into the esophagus- a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux, GERD, or infant reflux. The small muscle between the esophagus and the stomach (lower esophageal sphincter) keeps stomach contents where they belong. In newborns, this muscle is still growing. Until this muscle is fully mature, spitting up might be an issue — especially if your baby is full.

Here is the thing! The amount of milk or formula your baby spits up can be deceiving! After a spit up, it can feel very overwhelming to see what looks like an entire feed splattered on the floor or soaking into fabric. What looks like an entire feed is likely only a small amount.

Take a look at this graphic. Especially on fabric, spit up can spread quickly and look like far more than is actually present. One tablespoon of fluid soaks through the entire chest area of a multi layer swaddle within moments. One tablespoon is only 1/2 an ounce or 15ml, a small fraction of a feeding for most newborns!

Spit up is very common in many healthy newborns. As long as baby spits up without discomfort, it comes out with ease, and baby is gaining weight, this is what I refer to as “a laundry problem” more than anything else. If baby is difficult to soothe or is in pain, is refusing to eat, if spit up is discolored (green or bloody), or if baby is having trouble gaining weight then it is time to consult with your pediatrician for further evaluation.

A few tips if your little one is a “happy spitter”:
-Keep your baby upright. Let gravity be on your side! Feed your baby in a more upright position. Follow each feeding with extra time in an upright position, avoiding immediate active play or bouncing.
-Avoid overfeeding. Feeding your baby smaller amounts a bit more frequently may help.
-Take time to burp your baby. Frequent burps during and after each feeding can keep air from building up in your baby's stomach.
