Answer to: “I don’t have to increase my protein intake because in my blood results, the protein came out okay. ”
What Does Total Protein Mean In A Blood Lab?
The result of “Total Protein” within the benchmark range 6.4 – 8.9) only measures the amount of proteins circulating in the blood, mainly albumin and globulins.
This serves to evaluate functions like liver, kidneys, immune system, general nutrition, but it doesn't measure how much protein you consume or how much muscle mass you have.
Why doesn't this mean you're consuming enough protein?.
1. Even if you consume low protein, your body maintains stable blood levels by moving proteins from your muscles and tissues (i.e. destroying muscle!). ).
2. This test doesn't reflect the amount of muscle you have or your ability to regenerate it. You can have a “normal” blood result and still be losing muscle mass (Sarcopenia).
3. With age, it's common to lose muscle despite having proteins in the normal range, because the body doesn't make the same use of the protein ingested.
What is the actual recommendation for consumption?
• What appears in the labels (RDA: 0.8 g per kilo weight as 30 g/day for many adults) is the minimum to survive, not to be strong or healthy.
• Muscle health experts suggest between 0.7 and 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (e.g. a 150lb person = 100–150g of protein per day).
Bottom line:
Your test may be within range, which is good because it shows that your liver and kidneys are working well. But that doesn't mean you're consuming enough protein to maintain muscle mass.
If you already have muscle loss, you need to increase your daily intake of quality clean protein, combine it with strength exercise, and monitor your body measurements, not just blood.
