It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Rita Chicoine (née Lapolice) on April 16, 2026, at the age of 94, with her three children by her side.

Rita was a loving great-grandmother, grandmother, devoted mother, and cherished wife. She shared nearly 75 years of marriage (just three weeks shy) with her beloved husband, Joseph (Joe) Emile Chicoine, who predeceased her. She is now reunited with her son Joseph and her grandson Ryan Marshall.

She leaves behind her cherished children: Roddy Chicoine (Anne), Joanne Chicoine-Brisson (François), and Line Marshall (Stuart). She will be deeply missed by her eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

Rita was the beloved daughter of the late Donat Lapolice and Marie Regina-Louisiana Jutras. She was the last surviving member of her ten siblings: her brothers Albert, Henri, Jean Noël, and Paul-Emile Lapolice, and her sisters Françoise Camirand, Gertrude Lapolice, Noëlla Plante, Laura Lapolice, Hélène Ouimet, and Yvette Mathieu.

She is also reunited with her in-laws Albert and Marie-Anna Chicoine; her brother-in-law Albany (Ben) Chicoine; and her sisters-in-law Marie Jeanne Gauvreau, Alice Auclair, Adrienne Gauvreau, Angeline Chicoine, and Simone Carpentier. She will also be fondly remembered by Myra McDermott.

Rita had a young-at-heart spirit. She loved camping, long walks, and was always ready for a good game of cards. She enjoyed traveling, especially her winter getaways to Barbados.

An exceptional cook, Rita found great happiness in feeding everyone. Her kitchen was always open, her table always full, and her home always welcoming.

Rita's legacy is one of love, generosity, and adventure. She will be remembered for her open heart and the countless memories created around campfires, family gatherings, card games, and home-cooked meals. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

As per Rita's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private celebration of life will be held on July 18, 2026, with immediate family.

Rita's final care has been entrusted to Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home, Temiskaming Shores. Condolences and tributes may be shared at www.buffamleveille.com

There has been a darkness in our lives since early Monday, April 13. The birds' songs are sadder; the sky is less bright.

Many things have dulled since we lost one of the kindest people to ever walk this earth. Janice Kathleen Walsh (nee Liscumb) was born in Haileybury, Ontario to Violet (predeceased) and George (predeceased) in October of 1946. She lived in various small communities, mainly in Northern Ontario, while growing up.

As a teen, she moved to Toronto to attend post secondary school, settled there and married John while beginning her first career as a law clerk. After successfully establishing herself in the city, family life pulled her back to Northern Ontario in the early '70s, to raise her children.

Janice raised two children and many others (borrowed for periods of time). She always said those years were the happiest of her life. Mom was the most amazing person imaginable. She welcomed every friend into our home with food and fun. Tons of fun, while keeping a parental eye on everything. You would think her resources were endless because there were always treat supplied and special adventures to be taken!

She spent her free time during those years, making the yard a more beautiful place. She planted trees all around and maintained a ginormous vegetable garden. There were lots of people to share with when the garden came to fruition. Visitors were frequent and coffee and treats were never in short supply! Mom was always munching on treats.

Despite being completely committed and deeply involved in her family life, she managed to continue upgrading and updating her education for her next career as an attendance counsellor with District School Board, Ontario North East, before that Temiskaming Board of Education. After getting us enrolled in school, she followed us as a part-time attendance counsellor - eventually becoming full-time and working out of her office at TDSS.

During those years, it became very obvious to people outside our family what a bright light Mom was! As far as Mom was concerned, there were no bad kids. Anyone who dared mention that one of her kids was bad was in for a big lecture! Every young person who came under her wing, was always treated like her own. She was so much to so many, and it became clear that we had to share her.

Some relied on her for her wise counsel. Some relied on her for her acceptance. Some relied on her for friendship. Some relied on her for physical help like shopping or visiting. Many relied on her for parenting support – either needing parenting themselves or needing help with parenting.

One infinite resource that she was willing to share with everyone was her time. We often shared her with others in need because everyone was always welcome in our home. No matter what situation you brought to mom, she always knew the right thing to say. Her sincerity and her wisdom were always so obvious. She was as loyal a person as could be. We cannot imagine how many secrets she held for so many people!

Many times over the years, we have had opportunities while being in public with Mom to hear from former students who she helped. They have shared stories of her feeding them groceries when they had nothing to eat, taking them to the hospital when they had no one for support, or just being there when they needed someone. She always made light of these stories and told everybody that anyone could've done what she did. That is simply not true. She was very special and one of a kind to so many.

After retiring from her attendance counsellor job (having munched on candy through all of the years!!), Mom transitioned to a role of becoming a supportive mentor to her grandchildren. In addition to sharing her many favourite candies and treats with them, she was always available to cheer the grandkids on for their big milestones and their little daily achievements and put some of her sportsman skills to work.

In her youth, she was an avid downhill skier. Thankfully, she kept the skis hung up in the shed and transitioned to becoming a wicked croquet and badminton player in the backyard! She also kept her muscles up to s***f by providing wagon rides and crawling on the floor many times to be the horse for horse rides! Most importantly, she taught her children and grandchildren that she would always be proud of them for every single thing they did.

Mom was also a lifelong animal lover. Aside from snakes and spiders, she never met an animal that could not make its way into her heart and there were many! In recent years, she has become besties with her grand puppy, Oscar.

Mom had so many special relationships over the years! There were many special people during her childhood that she spoke of right until the end of her life. There were many special friends and colleagues she also spoke of over the years. Despite the fact that distance and time may have separated Mom from her people – she always remembered and respected those she loved!

Using her fabulous way with words, she shared many greeting cards over the years that demonstrated her unique twist on humor. She also shared many great stories. We hope that her people will continue to share them. Please take time to tell people about this wonderful lady and try to inspire a kind act in her name. That would be a fabulous legacy for someone so amazing to others. We are honouring Mom's wishes to not hold a service. Those acts of kindness and sharing of stories will be her legacy.

Janice will be reunited with many special loved ones including her parents and grandparents. Three extra special mothers will be waiting for her: Auntie Kay: Kathleen Plaunt, Auntie: Evelyn Burns, and Nana: Etta Bryer. We can only hope that their happiness will be felt by all of us.

Janice is lovingly remembered by her husband, John, her children, Jennifer and Andrew, and her grandchildren, Jessica, Christopher, Lex, and Ava. She is also remembered by numerous family members. In addition to other family, her siblings of the heart will be missing her greatly: Laurie Taylor, Patty Burke (Paul), Katherine Dennis, Diane Beatty, Ray Trowhill (Rosemary), and Marilyn Doucette.

Janice's family would like to echo her own sentiments and state publicly that Dr. Blount is truly an earth angel. He was Mom's doctor for many decades and was a fabulous support to her - always. We can never thank you enough for all you have done. Mom's entire care team of the past several months deserve a huge thank you, as well. You met her at her worst moments and made them better. She was grateful for each of you. We are so appreciative of each and every one who made Mom's journey better-thank you!

Mrs Walsh's care has been entrusted to Buffam Leveille Funeral Home. Tributes and condolences may be shared at www.buffamleveille.com

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of a very special lady, Audrey Kathleen Church (nee Maguire), on April 10, 2026, in her 98th year, in Englehart, Ontario, surrounded by family.

Born to Robert and Vera Maguire (nee Campbell) on May 6, 1928, Audrey spent her early years in Hill's Lake, Ontario. She married the love of her life, Renaildo "Nelly," in 1949, and they spent 47 happy years together. She was predeceased by her only sibling, Marjory; her husband, Nelly; her son, Frayne; her son-in-law, Michael McCallan; her nephews, Dean, Lance, and Terry; and her grandson, Thomas Garland. She is survived by her children, Lyn (Cheryl), Wendy (Barry Garland), Duncan (Maureen), and Kelly (Lisa Jamieson). Lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Gwen Church. Audrey will be sadly missed by her 11 grandchildren—Blair (Jen), Sarah, Spencer (Victoria), Shannon, Shelby (Preston), Dakota, Robin (Chris), Dana, Ashley (Nabeel), Dustin (Shannon), and Karly—as well as 17 great-grandchildren: Morgan, Michael, Charlotte, Hudson, Riley, Owen, Grayson, Sophia, Lucas, Olivia, Gracee, Emalee, Cody, Saud, Talal, Ayah, and Hashem. She will also be fondly remembered by many cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout Ontario.

Audrey had a contagious laugh and quick wit. She possessed a lifelong talent for knitting, particularly her famous dishcloths. She was a proud member of the Legion Branch 104 Ladies Auxiliary in Englehart for over 70 years, as well as a member of the Red Hat Society and the United Church Women. In addition to raising her large family, she held a variety of jobs throughout her life, including telephone operator, tree planter, and home care assistant. Audrey enjoyed many summers at her family cottage in Gowganda—attending bingo nights, picking blueberries, and enjoying visits from family and friends where she could spend time on the screened porch. She was also a longtime curler and an avid fan of the sport, as well as of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Melinda Frappier, her caregiver; Sue White (Bond); and Ontario Health and Home Support for helping to keep Audrey in her home for the past three years, and to the palliative care team for taking such great care of our mom. Special recognition to longtime friends Nancy Nelson and Doris Hack for their many visits and support over the years.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Saint Paul's-Emmanuel Community Church, followed by a luncheon at the Englehart Legion Branch 104. A private family interment will follow at a later date.

In memory of Audrey, donations can be made to the Englehart and District Hospital Palliative Care Unit or the Englehart Legion Branch 104 Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Church's final care has been entrusted to Buffam Leveille Funeral Home. Condolences and tributes may be shared at www.buffamleveille.com.

She retired in March of 2020, closing a remarkable chapter of her life filled with service and care for others. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, Maurice Gauthier, on March 28, 2026, at the age of 92. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his five children and family.

Maurice was the beloved husband of the late Rollande Léveille (married in 1956), with whom he shared 51 wonderful years of marriage. He was a devoted and cherished father to André Gauthier (Carmen), Liliane Gravel (André), Céline Duguay (Claude),
Doris Maille (Martin), and France Gauthier (Richard).

He was a proud and loving "Pépère" to Natasha Gauthier, Michelle Gauthier, Nadia Gauthier, Tania Gauthier, Rémi Gravel, Nathalie Gravel, Annik Gravel, Alain Duguay, Félix Duguay, the late Alex Duguay, the late Andrew Maille, and Monica Maille; and a treasured great-grandfather to 21 great-grandchildren.

Born in Earlton on March 13 1934, Maurice was the son of the late Paul Gauthier and the late Jeannette Loranger. He was a dear brother to the late Gérard Gauthier (Cécile Goudreault), the late Thérèse (Lou Quenneville), the late Marie-Paule (late David Jones), the late Albert (Jeanne d'Arc Rivard), Philippe (Juliette Léveillé), Lucille (late Jerry Panagapka), the late Marcel, the late Lorraine (Stefan Makuch), the late Claire (Nestor Léveillé), and Robert (Gisèle Alary).

He is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law of the Léveillé family, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Maurice was a dairy farmer for over 20 years; cultivating and working the fields, and the harvest season, were his true passion. He also worked for 15 years at Temiskaming Plastics, delivering drainage tiles for agricultural land, and later for the Township of Armstrong (approximately 5 years), where he was responsible for the maintenance and management of the arena and the public pool in Earlton.

He found joy in life's simple pleasures: fishing, hunting, camping with his family, picking blueberries, and playing cards, especially cribbage. He enjoyed live music, dancing, socializing, and chatting with people. Deeply involved in his community, he proudly served as a volunteer firefighter in Earlton for 30 years.

Maurice will be remembered for his warm smile, his beautiful blue eyes, his wonderful stories, and his great sense of humour.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Temiskaming Lodge for their kindness and compassion. The small gestures-sharing a hot coffee, offering a warm hug, and providing daily care-made his stay truly special.

The Gauthier family will receive relatives and friends at Paroisse St-Jean-Baptiste Church, 31 - 10th Street West, Earlton, on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Saturday, April 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A funeral mass will be held at Église St-Jean-Baptiste on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

In memory of Maurice, donations to the "Coeur du Village" of Earlton, or to the "Earlton Fire Department" would be greatly appreciated. Condolences and memories may be shared online at buffamleveille.com.

Jamie Carter, Funeral Director

Hello. My name is Jamie Carter. After growing up in New Liskeard, Ontario I made my way to Toronto to train and become a licenced Funeral Director. After being away for 19 years, I can’t express how happy I am to come home to Temiskaming Shores to serve the communities I grew up in. I promise to be there when you need me and to work tirelessley for the community I love.
