On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the APNS acknowledges the enduring impacts of colonialism, residential schools, and systemic injustices on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. These harms are not only historical but ongoing; shaping the health, wellbeing, and lived experiences of Indigenous communities today.
As psychologists, we have an ethical responsibility to recognize how these traumas intersect with mental health, to listen deeply to Indigenous voices, and to engage in culturally responsive and trauma-informed care. Reconciliation is not a single event but a continual process of reflection, education, and meaningful action.
We encourage our members and the public to learn about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and commit to personal and professional growth in understanding Canada’s true history.
Together, we can help create a future rooted in respect, equity, and healing.
