Avalon Sexual Assault Centre strongly believes that sexualized violence is a gendered and misogynist crime. Avalon Centre’s vision is to eliminate sexual assault/abuse and change the current socio-political culture that fosters sexism, social injustice and other forms of oppression. Central to Avalon Centre’s model is a feminist analysis of sexualized violence which informs Avalon Centre’s approach to education, services, and community mobilization. Feminist analysis asserts that sexualized violence exists because of power imbalances rooted in patriarchy and gender inequality as well as other forms of oppression and systemic inequalities based on gender/sex, age, race/ethnicity, class, ability, and religion. Sexualized violence is regarded as gendered because the majority of those victimized are female (86%) and the majority of perpetrators are male (98%) regardless of the victim’s gender. People who identify as transgender, gender queer, or who do not identify with a gender at all face disproportionate rates of sexualized violence (50%-80%) and may experience greater difficulty accessing support and services because of their gender identity. Racialized women and women living with disabilities are also disproportionately targeted for sexualized victimization compared to other women. Our counselling program provides therapeutic counselling services for women and trans people 16 and older. However, the centre itself is not a female-only space. Information and support services are available for supportive partners and non-offending parents. These programs were borne out of clients wanting support from significant people in their lives. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program provides medical follow up, forensic evidence collection, options information, support and referral after immediate sexual assault to all ages/all genders. We work with all members of the general public, victims/survivors, and service providers through our public awareness and community education/training program. Avalon Centre strongly believes that in order for systemic violence/oppression and male violence against women to be eradicated we need to work with all populations within our communities and Province. While it may not be possible or appropriate for Avalon to provide direct services to everyone it is important to continue to work with other organizations and with the community to address all aspects of how sexualized violence impacts us all. While Avalon Centre recognizes that the dynamic of dominance, control, and oppression is reflected in all acts of sexualized violence regardless of the gender of the perpetrator or of the person who has experienced sexualized violence, we also work in specialized ways to address misogyny and male violence against women. Recently we launched the I Don’t Owe You Campaign http://avaloncentre.ca/campaigns/i-dont-owe-you/

In April and May we engaged in a Feminist Speaking Tour using the I Don’t Owe You Campaign to address misogyny, male entitlement to women’s and trans peoples’ bodies, and sexualized violence. While we continue to advocate for systemic change that challenges all forms of violence and oppression and to collaborate with community partners to address service delivery gaps and barriers in HRM and Nova Scotia for all victims, we also stay committed to challenging and ending misogyny and male violence against women.

On December 6th, 1989, at l'École Polytechnique Montréal, 14 brilliant, hopeful, and motivated women lost their lives to a horrifying act of mass femicide-- a fatal form of gender-based violence, perpetrated by a gunman fueled by misogynistic hatred. Since then, we have seen little change in nation-wide levels of gender-based violence-- particularly, intimate partner and sexual violence. Women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals continue to be subjected to these forms of violence in high numbers, and in most severe cases, this violence can be fatal.

Although Nova Scotia officially declared intimate partner violence to be an epidemic just over a year ago, we have continued to see a rise in intimate partner violence-related deaths across the province, demonstrating an urgent need for meaningful, sufficiently funded, survivor-led prevention efforts.

Please join our organizations on Saturday, December 6th, the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women, for an evening of honouring, uplifting, and creating space for survivors of gender-based violence, while also remembering and grieving all those who have been lost to this devastating epidemic. At 4 pm, we will be meeting outside the John W. Lindsay YMCA for a candlelight walk, followed by a gathering in the YMCA Family and Child Centre for speakers, food, remembrance, and reflection. Those who are not joining the walk can meet us at 4:45 pm for the second portion of the event.

We look forward to sharing this important day with you. Our hearts are with all survivors, those who have been lost, and all those who feel the heavy weight of this epidemic each day.

We are proud to announce that Avalon’s Community Navigator Shi Gordon has been awarded the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case.

This award honors work that advances progress on issues related to gender-based violence, economic abuse, Indigenous and racialized perspectives, and the empowerment of women and girls.

Shi Gordon is a proud Two-Spirit, Indigenous, African-Nova Scotian leader whose life and work are dedicated to building a safer, more equal Canada for women and girls. Throughout her career, Shi has worked across community and provincial services to support survivors of violence and create learning opportunities for service providers. In her current role as a Community Navigator at Avalon Sexual Assault Centre, she connects African Nova Scotian and Indigenous women and girls who have survived sexual violence to essential services across the Halifax area.

Shi’s expertise was key in shaping Avalon’s submission to the Mass Casualty Commission, ensuring the unique challenges faced by racialized women and girls in rural areas were heard.

A powerful advocate and steadfast ally, Shi truly lives her values, demonstrating what it means to lead with courage, care, and purpose. We are so privileged to witness Shi’s commitment, passion, and care.

Congrats Shi, well-deserved.

We believe survivors.
We believe EM.
We believe in building a world where survivors are supported in courtrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, and everywhere.

The court's verdict is not a measure of a survivor’s truth. Legal outcomes are shaped by systems that too often silence, discredit, and retraumatize survivors. We see the strength it takes to come forward, honour the courage to speak the unspeakable, and recognize the weight of what survivors carry into courtrooms, media cycles, and everyday life.

To EM, you are not alone. You have sparked a movement that is growing louder with every voice raised in support.

To all survivors — your experiences matter. Your survival matters. Your healing matters.
