Did you know listening to 528 Hz calms the brain, reduces stress hormones like cortisol, and improves your mood? Playlists are online including Spotify. We also find kitchen dancing to 60s tunes does the trick! The point is your brain on music is a wonderous thing. Daniel Levitin wrote an excellent book about it https://bit.ly/3Yxbv5B

Nature nurtures. It’s as simple as that. Some ideas to reconnect with the outdoors during the winter months. When's the last time you:
• Took a hike or stroll after a new snowfall
• Foraged for décor and craft items
• Went stargazing snuggled under blankets with hot chocolate
• Made a snow angel or had a snow ball fight
• Enjoyed a winter picnic
• Bird watched
• Built a snowman
• Enjoyed a bonfire

Wintery weather gets under everyone’s skin. Combat the cold with skin care tips especially for those living with chronic swelling (works for others too!)
• Moisturize deeply to avoid chapping and dryness.
• Wear sunscreen. Winter sunshine still delivers UV rays.
• Moisturize at bedtime to avoid creams and oils damaging the fabric of your compression garment.
• Don’t scratch dry itchy skin. A cold pack applied to the area for 5 minutes soothes.
• Exfoliate with care using only a soft facecloth. Bath puffs and loofahs are too abrasive.
• Use a light, water-based day cream and wait until it’s absorbed before donning compression garments.
• Thwart yeast and fungal infections by changing wet clothes after winter activities like skiing and shoveling. Bathe with gentle a soap, dry well and moisturize.

Experiencing occasional leg swelling? Elevate! Find a comfy spot to lie down and use pillows to raise your legs slightly higher than your heart. Relax like this for 10 minutes a couple times a day. This eases leg tension and aches, boosts circulation, and lowers swelling. https://mldclinic.ca/why-we-swell
P.S. If you wear compression garments to manage chronic swelling, it’s a nice way to finish the day!

Holiday events centre around food. Yum! It nourishes the belly and soul. After the indulgences, a couple of thoughts to get back on track…Inflammatory foods increase inflammation and swelling, and many health conditions (including lymphedema, lipedema, heart disease and diabetes) create an ongoing inflammatory response too. We dish out further morsels to chew on in this blog: https://bit.ly/49aQ6p3

It wouldn’t be the holidays without binge watching Christmas flicks. Our fav combos: Elf/ Love Actually/Rudolph and Home Alone/Die Hard/Grinch. During a marathon session remember to move, stretch and change positions often. Even if it’s just enroute for another snacky snack! Better yet, plan an intermission walk. Walking remains one of the best physical activities for managing chronic swelling because it increases circulation, engages muscles in a low impact way, and lowers inflammation. Plus, you choose the course, distance and pace that suits.

Raise your hand if you aren’t drinking enough water! We're all familiar with the benefits of staying hydrated and the pitfalls when we don’t. When it comes to swelling management, sometimes there’s a belief less water intake means less bloating and swelling. Oh, how wrong! Your lymph fluid is mostly water with other good bits mixed in. We treat swelling

Your swelling has a root cause and it can be treated. Everyday we help people make a change for the better with their health. Let's get started. Lymphatic massage is a gentle therapy that relieves acute and chronic swelling. It encourages the movement of lymph to reduce swelling and speed healing. It’s a primary therapy for lymphedema and lipedema. MLD therapy also reduces or eliminates swelling from cancer treatments, after injuries, and following surgery. Learn more at www.mldclinic.ca
