Truth bomb 💣. You can absolutely have poor metabolic health, insulin resistance, or Prediabetes without having an elevated ‘BMI’ or being overweight.
First of all, your BMI is not a good indicator of health as it only measures your height:weight ratio, which doesn’t have much merit.
You could technically use your body fat percentage, your waist circumference, and/or waist:hip ratio to BETTER assess your risk of insulin resistance….
But in reality, your risk of poor metabolic health and insulin resistance is directly linked to your lifestyle…
If your diet and lifestyle are unhealthy… - if you’re diet is high in ultra-processed foods and if you’re inactive, for example - your risk of insulin resistance, Prediabetes, and Type 2 Diabetes directly increases.
Is this new information for you? Thoughts?

It’s Vitamin D3 season! 🍂 ❄️
The best way to supplement with Vitamin D3 is through a high quality drop such as CanPrev’s or Orange Natural’s D3 drops.
The dose is dependent on your needs, but most of us would have normal blood D3 levels at 2000-3000IU/day.
Your 🩸 D3 levels should be above 75nmol/L, but no higher than 125nmol/L in Canadian standards.
Vitamin D3 has MANY roles in our body and is absolutely vital for good mental health, immune health, muscle health, bone health, and much more.
If you’re unsure if you need D3, just remember that 70-93% of Canadians have D3 insufficiency or deficiency…
&
Checking your blood levels of D3 is important as well. Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider about D3 levels and correct D3 doses for your needs.

I am SO excited to offer you a brand new guide to improve your health! This one is ALL about preventing AND treating fatty liver disease - also known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Fatty liver disease is often known as the 'silent disease' or the 'silent killer' because testing for fatty liver is not routine. MOST find out there is fat on their liver through a CT scan or an ultrasound for another ailment or another organ.

However, roughly 25%, 1 in 4, (or more) Canadian adults have fatty liver which is linked to metabolic diseases such as heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, and even liver cancer.

Prevent or treat fatty liver today using the guide below!

I’m just going to say it… Fruits are superfoods! 🥝🍇🫐🍓🍍🥑🥭
I know, I know… Technically ‘superfoods’ is not a term.
However, when a food as powerful 💥 as fruit is demonized due to ‘sugar’ content, I feel the need to speak up for this colourful, nutrient & phytonutrient-rich, fibrous & delicious food group.
The best way to benefit greatly from fruits is to:
☑️ Choose a wide variety of fruits regularly - What’s new in season? What’s locally grown? What’s new on the shelves at grocery store this week?
Variety is absolutely vital to ensure you receive all of the amazing antioxidants and nutritional properties found in fruits.
+
1000’s of strains of bacteria in your gut 🦠 that keep you healthy love to eat the fibres and the phytochemicals found in fruit.
☑️ While most of us can eat fruit alone without a major sugar spike, those with insulin resistance or metabolic dysfunction would want to take in fruit with a high protein meal with fat to avoid a spike in blood sugar. 🩸
For example, pair a couple different colour fruits with eggs and avocado for a delicious breakfast.
☑️ Enjoy fruits after a workout 🏋️‍♀️ (with protein) as the antioxidants in fruits may help repair muscle tissue and have a local and systemic anti-inflammatory effect. The carbohydrates found in fruits help with recovery as well. 💪
Essentially, despite having naturally occurring sugar, the nutrients in fruits improve gut, liver, brain, eye, heart, kidney, and blood vessel health, and help to reduce your risk of metabolic and chronic disease.

Eat Well Nova Scotia

Eat Well Nova Scotia began in 2015 as Eat Well Halifax with Nicole Marchand, RD. Nicole has been a consulting dietitian since 2012 and offers services and programs related to gut health, reducing inflammation and preventing and treating chronic illnesses. At this time, Nicole offers one-on-one consultations at The Floatation Centre in Halifax as well as online. She also offers a 5 step program to optimized health and a 3 step program to reduce IBS-like symptoms such as SIBO, stomach pain, bloating and gas.

Since the beginning of her career as a dietitian and health professional, Nicole has envisioned a province where individuals are in control of their own health, are offered the tools and resources to ensure they are making the best choices for themselves, are offered advice when required, and are able to live a high quality, healthy life. As Nova Scotia has the highest risk for diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, mental illnesses and cancer in Canada, her mission is to ensure people are equipped with the tools and resources to prevent and treat these illnesses.

Nicole specializes in digestive health and chronic illnesses as she understands that many illnesses stem from inflammation and imbalances at the level of the gut. By following her advice and using their tools and resources, one can ensure better health, more energy, less inflammation and a lower risk of diabetes, arthritis, hormone imbalances and heart disease, all ailments which are seen throughout our province, yet are preventable and manageable.
