Today we celebrate World Physiotherapy Day! The theme for this year is healthy aging with a focus on preventing falls and frailty.

Strength training is an important part of fall prevention and it’s never too late to start! Our physiotherapists Alexa, Maggie, and Amy can prescribe you a personalized program to help improve your strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility.

Encouraging activity and maintaining relationships are a part of healthy aging. Our physiotherapists work with people in all stages of life and provide a supportive environment to help promote physical and mental wellbeing.

The Brickyard team is taking a well deserved break this Labour Day weekend! The clinic will be open for existing appointments with Maggie on Saturday, August 30th and Marie on Monday, September 1st.

We will be back to regular hours on Tuesday, September 2nd and welcoming back Dr. D’Arcy from her maternity leave! ☺️

September is busy as students return to school and we settle back into busy routines. Don’t worry if you strayed from your usual treatment schedule (you’re not the only one!), our front desk can help you book in your appointments for the upcoming months. Keep in mind that evening appointments are especially popular during this time so booking ahead helps ensure you are able to book a time that works best for you. 🗓️

Have a great long weekend! ☀️

Choosing the right backpack and knowing how to pack it is important to help prevent poor posture, muscle strain, neck and back pain.

When looking for a bag, look for something that is lightweight, has 2 wide padded shoulder straps that are adjustable, a padded back, and chest and waist straps. 🎒

Only pack what you need that day! A full backpack should be max 10-15% of the wearer’s bodyweight. Pack the heaviest items closest to the body.

Always wear both shoulder straps - these should be adjusted so the bag sits flush against the back. If walking to school, make use of the chest and/or waist straps! 🚶🏻‍♀️

We hope these tips help you pack it light and wear it right! ✨

Welcome back Dr. D’Arcy! ✨

Dr. D’Arcy will be returning from mat leave (part time) in 2 weeks! Her schedule is online starting the first week in September. Existing clients can book online or contact the front desk to book.

Her hours will be limited until the new year, but Dr. Brittany .brittanyfraser will continue to be available for any of Dr. D’Arcy’s clients if her hours do not fit with your schedule. Please feel free to use them interchangeably as needed.

Baby Beau and his sister are doing really well and have enjoyed having her undivided attention but she’s ready to get back to work. Many thanks for your patience while she focused on her family the past few months. 💕

RMT approach to TMJ dysfunction 😬

Intraoral massage is one of the most effective techniques to treat TMJ dysfunction. A gentle, hands-on approach using a gloved hand allows deeper access to the jaw muscles from inside the mouth. These muscles are often responsible for chronic pain and dysfunction. Treatment also includes working on the surrounding muscles of the head, neck, and shoulders which often hold secondary tension.

These sessions are guided by clear communication and informed consent as we understand this can be a sensitive area. Your comfort and control are always prioritized. Treatments are progressive and build upon the previous session to gradually reduce muscle tension, improve function, and support lasting relief!

If you’ve been dealing with TMJ-related discomfort, this focused approach may be the support you need. Feel free to reach out with questions or to book a session with Katie.

TMJ dysfunction can present as: jaw tension, clenching or grinding, clicking or popping in the jaw, tension headaches, or facial pain.

Katie has recently completed advanced continuing education in TMJ dysfunction for Registered Massage Therapists. This deepens her ability to assess and treat the symptoms and underlying causes of jaw-related pain.

Releasing these muscles can help:
- Reduce jaw pain + tightness
- Ease clicking or popping in the joint
- Relieve tension headaches
- Lessen facial + neck tightness
