Why Do Horses Need Massage?
Horses, while they are very stoic animals, have many ways of showing us that they are experiencing things like pain, discomfort, injury/illness and even stress. While we often brush off these signs as being “just their personality”, or the horse simply being “rude”, a lot of the time that’s simply not the case. When our horses are consistently in a bad mood, or have a habit of pinning their ears at us for touching certain areas, or being overly girthy, it is generally a sign that they are experiencing discomfort.
Massage and other bodywork can have an immense impact on these symptoms. Bodywork helps to bring awareness to areas of tension and muscle guarding, and promote healthy blood flow. It can reduce that tension and decrease pain, which is why it is so important for our horses to have massage, especially when they have “jobs” that require them to be in shape and feeling good. Massage is also important for general maintenance, at any stage of life. Having regular bodywork on your horse can help to prevent injury and discomfort in the future, just like with people. At the end of the day, the better horses feel, the better they can perform, which results in a better quality of life.
