Ask Team Beech Street!
Q: I have pain in my heels. What can I do to help relieve it?

A: The cause of foot and heel pain can be multifaceted. Ensuring you have supportive shoes that are appropriate for your feet is an important consideration. Additionally, it can be helpful to wear supportive sandals or slippers inside, especially if your house has hardwood or tile floors.

If you find your feet are feeling tired at the end of the day, place a water bottle in the freezer and roll it back and forth through your arch to help relief any inflammation accumulated throughout the day.

Ask Team Beech Street: Tight Shoulders

Q: The muscles surrounding my shoulder blades are always sore and tight. What can I do to help loosen them?

A: Muscle tension in the shoulder girdle can be the result of a previous injury, chronic stress, poor posture biomechanics or a sign of an underlying health condition. When experiencing tight or sore muscles in the shoulder region implementing a few simple changes into your daily routine can help alleviate muscle tension and increase shoulder range of motion.

Here are a few tips to help decrease muscle tension:

Performing a muscle warmup before daily activities is a beneficial way to reduce the chance of musculoskeletal injury. Begin with gentle shoulder rolls, neck semi-circle motions, swinging the arms back and forth and side to side before moving into a more dynamic stretching routine.

Focus on stretching the neck, shoulder girdle and spine performing chin tucks, shoulder rolls and cat cow spinal stretches.

Breathing and stress reduction exercises are an excellent way to decrease tension across the shoulder blades. When taking shorter breathes the accessory muscles between the neck and shoulders are more activated. Learning to take deeper thoracic breathes can be helpful in alleviating stress on these muscles.

Bringing your awareness to your shoulders throughout the day allows you to actively work on relaxing your shoulders and relieving muscle tension in that area. If you are working at a desk, it is important to implement breaks throughout the day to reduce tension in your lower back and chest area.

The shoulder joint comprises of the collar bone, scapula, and glenohumeral “ball-and-socket” joints along with multiple muscle attachments. Having good posture and proper body alignment decrease the chance of weak back muscles and increased spinal inclination, which are risk factors for developing limited range of motion in shoulder joints.

Research shows that taking routine movement breaks increases work efficiency, job satisfaction, and your overall quality of work!

We recommend that every hour you step away from your desk to re-centre and focus. Even if it’s just a short walk, getting a glass of water, or doing a lap of your home or office.

Here is an easy stretching program to keep your body moving and your mind energized…and you can do it right from your chair!

1. Interlock your fingers and straighten your elbows. Ensure your palms are facing away and reach forward. Hold 10 – 20 seconds and perform 2 times.

2. Interlock your fingers and straighten your elbows. Ensure your palms are facing away and reach to the sky. Hold 10 – 20 seconds and perform 1 time.

3. With one hand reach overhead and grab your opposite elbow. Lean towards the opposite side of the elbow causing the side of your core to arc. Hold 8 – 10 seconds and perform each side.

4. Interlock your fingers and straighten your elbows. Ensure your palms are facing away and reach to the sky. Hold 10 – 20 seconds and perform 1 time.

5. Perform a shoulder shrug with both shoulders at the same time. Hold 3 – 5 seconds and perform 3 times.

6. Grasp one of your hands behind your back. Pull down on the grasped hand and bend your neck away from said side. Hold 10 – 12 seconds and perform on each side.

7. Put your palms together in the centre of your chest and while they stay in contact move your hands towards the ground. Hold 10 seconds

8. Put your palms together in the centre of your chest and while they stay in contact rotate your finger tips away from your body. Hold 10 seconds.

9. While sitting have one arm reach to the sky and at the same time have the other arm reach to the ground. Hold 8 – 10 seconds and perform on each side.

10. While sitting, cross your legs while applying extra pressure with the opposite hand. Also rotate your core in the opposite direction of the crossed leg. Hold 8 – 10 seconds and perform on each side.

11. While sitting put both hands in the small of your back and arc your back looking up towards the sky. Hold 10 – 15 seconds and perform 2 times.

12. Shake out your hands. Perform for 8 – 10 seconds.

This is your sign to book an appointment with Brendon!

"I wanted to say a big thanks to this centre and Brendon Smith. Several months ago, I came to your clinic regarding an issue with certain muscles in my legs/hips. Brendon helped me to understand where the problem was coming from, and how to correct some posture issues I was having. Since doing the exercises he told me to do, and being mindful of my posture issues, I have had zero pain in those leg/hip muscles. Thank you so much!" ~ Katelyn
