October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Friday October 17th marks National Mammography Day. This is an important opportunity to highlight the value of early detection and encourage eligible individuals across Nova Scotia to participate in regular screening.

Currently, the percentage of eligible individuals ages 40-74 in Nova Scotia who participate in screening remains well below the national target of 70 per cent and varies widely across the province. Screening rates decreased significantly following COVID and have yet to return to pre-COVID levels.

The Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program is designed to support eligible individuals in the early detection of breast cancer. Finding cancer early can make treatment easier and more effective.

It is important for you to know that mammograms are not foolproof and should not be the only way you guard against breast cancer. They should be done regularly but you should also know what is normal for your breasts. If you notice any changes in your breasts before your next visit, such as a new lump, ni**le discharge, or changes to the skin like redness or dimpling, you should contact a primary care provider right away, even if you have recently had a normal mammogram.

Dense Breasts Canada wants to hear from you! Our new survey will help us better understand the screening Canadians are receiving and strengthen our push for earlier detection and life-saving change.

We’ve made important progress: breast density notification, self-referral for screening at 40, and some access to supplemental screening. But critical gaps remain, and your voice is key to moving forward.

Today is the day!!!

Today I picked up my shirt. I will be wearing it with pride that I am a Fighter ! I will also be wearing one of my two hats that have the signatures of every single nurse, doctor, surgeon, pharmacist , radiologist , and hosp staff that have played a part in saving my life ! I know there are even a few missing but im determined to get them when I see them ❤️ I have not taken them for granted . I have so much to owe to each and every person. They have literally helped Fill My Boots and my Soul!

Tonight as I sit here , I have double checked another kit to be delivered tomorrow. I am grateful to everyone who has helped along the way! We have helped so many women ! That is just simply amazing!

It’s been a busy few months here , between the last few chemo sessions and recovery, and building kits and delivering , it’s been a healing beginning to this year ! If you need a kit or know someone that does , please don’t hesitate to reach out !

My apologies for being quiet ! The chemo treatments have been very difficult. I am happy to share we have delivered 10 kits to women in need of them to date and there will be many more to be delivered thanks to Penny and everyone’s donations !

I cannot thank you enough for helping make some lives a little easier !

After a tough first chemotherapy session, I'm emerging with renewed strength. I'm eager to celebrate my friend's remarkable achievement. While serving on HMCS Charlottetown, she spearheaded a fundraiser for the Wonder Woman Project, shaving her head and donating 16 inches of hair. Her efforts yielded an impressive $3300!!! . Her courage and new style are truly admirable. We shared the brave shave experience on my chemo day - she wears it with greater flair! ❤️

This will go a long way in helping others! Penelope is just simply amazing!!

Good morning! I am overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone! We have built 7 kits and are close to completing several more! My goal is to build 20 or more as the year progresses! You all amaze me with your kindness!

On a side note of my own diagnosis I will be undergoing chemotherapy on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. I’m going to enjoy hockey games and turkey until I have had my fill! I am not going to stop making kits etc, this is the reason why these are welcomed!
