MYTH: You need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist.

FACT: Physiotherapists are direct access practitioners, meaning you can book an assessment without a referral from a physician.

This allows you to access care sooner without waiting for a doctor’s appointment — especially important if you’re dealing with pain, an injury, dizziness, pelvic health concerns, or mobility issues.

While some insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, many allow you time to obtain one after your first appointment. If you’re unsure, check with your insurance provider about your specific coverage.

You also do not need a referral for motor vehicle accident or WCB-related physiotherapy claims.

Questions? Our team is happy to help.

What a great weekend earlier this spring in Carlsbad, California —the home of Enovis and the DonJoy Defiance Brace.

Mike spent a few days connecting with industry leaders, learning the latest in bracing technology, and seeing firsthand how these custom braces are designed and built to support athletes at every level.

A highlight of the weekend was hearing from Dr. Nathan Urquhart—bringing it back home with insights that directly impact how we care for our patients here in Nova Scotia.

We’re excited to bring this knowledge directly into our clinics at Young Kempt Physiotherapy and Beaverbank Sport & Orthopaedic Physiotherapy, continuing to provide high-level care for our athletes and active community—especially when it comes to custom bracing and return-to-sport support.

Grateful for the opportunity to keep learning, building relationships, and delivering better outcomes for the people we work with every day.

Things that make physiotherapists & athletic therapists happy

Seeing strength improve.
Watching someone return to the activities they love.
Helping a patient move without pain again.
And the confidence that comes with progress.

May is National Physiotherapy Month — a time to recognize the impact of physiotherapy in helping people move, recover, and stay active.

At our clinics, these moments are why we do what we do.

Helping you move better, feel stronger, and get back to what matters most.

Perimenopause can bring many changes to the body — including changes that affect pelvic health.

Hormonal shifts during this stage of life can influence bladder function, pelvic floor strength, core stability, and overall movement.

Pelvic health physiotherapy can help address concerns such as bladder leakage, pelvic pressure, pelvic pain, and difficulty staying active.

Treatment may include pelvic floor assessment, targeted strengthening, breathing and core coordination, and exercise guidance to help you move with confidence.

At Young Kempt Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy Clinic, Brittany Klingmann provides pelvic health physiotherapy to support women through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.

If you’re experiencing pelvic health symptoms during this stage of life, support is available.

Not sure if physiotherapy can help you? We do a full assessment with all patients to get to the root of your issue. During that assessment we are full of questions, we do a number of tests and movements to get an idea of where you are compared to your goal. Once we have that data we discuss how Physio can fit into your plan to improve or return to function. If it niggles, aches, burns, hurts, feels tight, feels weak or generally feels off, call us. We can help you with the first step and refer you on to other medical professionals if physio isnt the right fit.

Our goal with each individual patient is to help you achieve a life you can enjoy — from playing with your grandchildren to running a marathon. No goal is too large or too small.

At our clinics, we are passionate about what we do and committed to ongoing education to stay at the forefront of rehabilitation.

Locally owned and operating in Halifax for over 25 years, our clinics are proud to have a highly experienced team, including 9 FCAMPT-certified physiotherapists, a level of training that is unmatched in the region.

We’re here to help you move better, feel stronger, and get back to what matters most.
