~ About the Project ~
The DV Community Apothecary is going to be a free/low cost herbal dispensary filled by local herbalists & plant people with homegrown medicinal plants, lovingly-made potions, and remedies.

~ Mission ~
The mission of The DV Community Apothecary Project is to support those of us struggling with life under the white-supremacist-cis-heteropatriarchy by offering plant medicine to strengthen our individual and collective resilience and resistance as we face state violence and repression, capitalism, and an ecological/climate crisis.

~ About Dave: the “DV” in our name ~
Dave Vasey was a son, brother, uncle, friend, comrade and mentor to many. He understood the importance of inclusion, connection, growth through challenge, and standing up for friends including – when needed - punching white supremacists. Unfortunately, Dave was also no stranger to state repression, community conflict and accountability, struggles with mental health, and the hardships and hardness of the world at large. In January 2019 at the age of 40, Dave killed himself. His decision still leaves his community reeling, grieving, and asking for ways we could have done better while also recognizing we did so much. We come away knowing that repression and this world takes its toll, that we need to be gentler with ourselves and each other, and that we need to strive for both personal and interpersonal healing. We all carry the trauma of our lives and this world; our defiant hearts equally fragile as they are strong. We are perfectly imperfect and indispensable – and we can always do better showing each other that. Without pedestalization or erasure, this project aims to recognize Dave and others in our collectives and communities who have been lost to suicide by creating a material and communal way to care for ourselves, and each other. Let’s be tough on our enemies, and gentle with each other.

We did a new thing!

This was our first time making a lotion instead of salve; and we chose carefully.

We present you with *the best* scar cream out there for unresolved scars and overactive scar tissue. Made possible with the experience & knowledge of Ember at who shared it in a Herbs for Trans Health class - and a handful of folks in the community who had the plant ingredients (and emulsion blender) we lacked!

This really was a communcal project of love ♡

This cream is pretty serious medicine and works best on scars between 2-12 months old that are healing right. We'd like to prioritize folks recovering from top surgery or self injury.

DM us for more info and to arrange drop-off in Hamilton!

It's been a little moment since posting, but we just wanted to let you know some amazing salves and creams are in the works for scars, healing, cold sores, pain rubs and more ♡

We're going to be working on a new format for folks to obtain apothecary items with the aim of making things more accessible during these weird COVID times.

Keep an eye out for updates by following our page (be sure to choose "see all posts"!).

With The Tower re-opening for their Sunday open hours, the apothecary will once more be accessible without an appointment!

While you will need to wear a mask to enter thebspace, we also ask that immediately before accessing the apothecary you use hand sanitizer, which will be made available.

Feel free to bring any empty or unused tincture bottles back at this time for collection :)

Additionally, if you're still unable to attend the space and need delivery, get in touch with ud via this page, or email.

Since March, The Tower has been closed to the public and has instead been hosting Downtown East Hamilton Mutual Aid. However, starting on Sunday September 6, we will be resuming our weekly Sunday drop-in hours from noon to 5pm.

These hours are a chance to come in and browse the hundreds of books in our library, access herbal medicines from the apothecary, check out what's new on the zine rack, or just to chat with others about the rapidly changing context we find ourselves in. Because before taking collective action, we need to find each other, and although we have all done our best to do that on the internet, it's no substitute for physical space to meet and discuss.

We will be trying to do this safely. We ask that people who come to open hours wear a mask and regularly clean their hands -- we will have some masks and sanitizer available, but it would be nice if people could also bring their own. We will be limiting the number of people in the space at a time, so conversations might move to the sidewalk or downstairs if need be.

The Tower will also be available for private bookings starting in September. We make the space available to groups who share our values, so if you need an indoor space to hold a meeting, The Tower has a comfortable main floor with a screen and projector, as well as a spacious downstairs with a small kitchen. The main floor is barrier-free, but the two washrooms are in the basement. For more details about the space or accessibility, visit our website at the-tower.ca.

See you at noon on the 6th and every Sunday after that.
