Community Living Hamilton

Community Living Hamilton is a not-for-profit organization and registered charity that offers a full range of services to people with special needs.

We are one of the largest not-for-profits in Hamilton; each year we provide service to approximately 1,000 children, teens, adults and families. Over 60 years ago, Community Living Hamilton was founded by a group of mothers who came together in a church basement to discuss how they could support each other and their sons and daughters with special needs. Since then, we have continued to establish programs and services that have enabled our clients to fully participate and contribute to their community. We continue to promote full inclusion through person-directed planning; which promotes independence, personal choice and assisting our clients lead the lives they want. Whether it's living independently or in a group setting, working in a supported environment or participating in community activities, we are here to help people realize their full potential and dreams.

Due to inclement weather and the suspension of DARTS service, all Community Participation program sites will be closed on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. All other programs will continue to provide service as scheduled.

Black History Month is a time to celebrate Black excellence — and also to reflect honestly on history.

Black and other racialized communities have faced longstanding barriers when accessing developmental, health, education, and social services. Systemic racism has shaped who receives support, how it’s delivered, and whose voices are heard.

This month, we acknowledge the need for equitable care, culturally responsive supports, and continued action to dismantle anti-Black racism in our sector. That work includes fostering belonging for Black families, elevating Black leadership, and recognizing the intersection of race and disability.

Learning, accountability, and change must continue — in February and beyond.

Our Children’s Inclusion Services team has secured 2 of the new Autistic Barbie dolls for the kids who visit our Charlton Children’s Respite! 🩷✨ These dolls were created in close collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) to promote meaningful representation and inclusion through play.

The Autistic Barbie doll includes design elements and sensory‑friendly details that reflect how some autistic children experience and interact with the world, as well as accessories like noise‑canceling headphones, a communication tablet, and a fidget spinner.

We’re so excited to bring these dolls to our respite space — offering more opportunities for joyful, inclusive play and helping every child see themselves represented. 💖🎀

The Winona Community Participation program showed what it truly means to come together as a community. 💙

Through their ongoing monthly give-back days, Winona program staff and clients raised funds to support a local family that frequent the neighbouring EarlyON program. This year’s recipients are Mandi, a single mom, and her three-year-old son Joshua, who was recently diagnosed with Autism.

It has been a challenging year for the family, and they are currently living with extended family while navigating significant change. Thanks to the generosity and teamwork of the Winona group, the funds raised were able to cover an entire Christmas—including a gift for Mandi, sensory toys, board books, wooden puzzles, and stuffies for Joshua, matching Christmas pajamas, a full Christmas dinner, and even breakfast for Christmas morning.

Winona staff members clients hand delivered the gifts to the family, bringing smiles, relief, and a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we support one another. 🫶
