📣A shoutout to all my clients. It’s hard work, mentally and physically, keeping up with daily scolio-corrections, exercises and the many other challenges that can come with scoliosis.

👏We all have hard days/weeks/months but I want you to know I see you and I am always cheering you on. There is no judgement here.

🤩 Pictured here is just a small number of the exercises and hours and hours that one of my awesome clients has put the work in on. Even on her hard days she shows up for herself and is an inspiration for us fellow scoliosis warriors.

Remembering when my helper was little 🥰

🙋‍♀️ A little fun fact about me, I love dogs and used to work with them professionally in many different areas.

🐾 I still participate in dog sports as my hobby. It keeps me active and doing one of the things I’ve always loved.

❤️Finding ways to keep doing what you enjoy or even finding a new passion is important, scoliosis or not.

👧 In my opinion the only thing more nerve wracking than getting updates about your own scoliosis is waiting to find out about that of your children.

🩻 While they aren’t sure what causes scoliosis they do know there’s a genetic component. With this in mind, it is important that if there is any family history of scoliosis, you continue to check your children or ask your family doctor to do so.

✅ My youngest daughter recently got the all clear for the second time from the orthopedic doctor because her curve measures under 10° (the threshold for diagnosing scoliosis). However, since she is an early teen, I will continue to check for any changes.

🩻 As you can see from her x-ray, the curve is minor ?however, there are other things to note; there is some rotation in the vertebrae, pelvic obliquity and a minor curve.

👀 Upon physical examination, there is also slight rotation noted and an elevated hip. So while the doctor says there is nothing to be done, we continue on with scoliosis specific exercises and general scolio-corrections.

❓🙋‍♀️ Not sure how to check your child at home? You can watch a quick video of the Adams Forward Bend test or send me a message.

Keep checking!!!!

I’ve always loved swimming, as you can probably tell from some of my posts 😊 I was on the swim team in high school, where I learned ins and out of each swim stroke. It wasn’t until years later that the front stroke began to bother my back 🙁

🏊‍♂️ As you can see in the pictures here, there is some rotation that happens when doing a proper front stroke. Now with this said I know others with scoliosis that this stroke does not bother them at all. It could simply be the location of my curves/rotation and or where the transition points are but this swim stroke no longer works for me and my back 🚫

If I was going to swim the front stroke now I would suggest keeping the body all in one long line, even when switching arms, so turning the entire body from head to toe, going side to side, not just the arms and thoracic area rotating. 🔄

🛟 My go to swim stroke now is the breaststroke. The stroke allows you to stay in line and I can adjust which hand I am pulling more water with, but both arms and legs are all moving together at the same time in the same direction.

‼️Reminder…you don’t have to stop doing what you enjoy, just find ways to modify!

Most people know swimming is easy on the joints so it’s not hard to guess that it would be good for those with scoliosis but did you know that you can use the pool for more than just swimming to help your body?

🛟 You can use the side of the pool/the wall to engage your scolio-corrections and stretches.

🫁 You can use the feedback/pressure of the water to work on your 3-dimensional breathing. The back float is a great way.

〰️ You can get a great arm and leg workout by treading water.

🧘 You can quiet the mind by swimming or ‘sitting’ underwater for as long as your comfortable with. Or even just floating can be peaceful and relaxing, especially since there is little weight on the body in the water.

🤸🏽‍♀️ You can let some stress go by playing in the water with abandon, like maybe you did as a child. The options are endless here :)

🏊‍♀️ Of course you can swim which is great exercise.

Most local, city or Y, pools have drop in options if you aren’t sure that it’s for you. Some may even have a sauna that you can use after your swim. Or, if you are a strong swimmer you could head right to your local lake, pond, or ocean 🌊

While some curves may be similar there are no steadfast rules when it comes to scoliosis. Curve(s) location, alignment, comorbidities, pain, bracing, surgery, rotation, age, movement, career, mental health….The list is endless in all the ways we are each unique.
This is one of the reasons it can be beneficial to see someone who specializes in scoliosis, someone who can more than just the spine into account.

One of the most important skills you can develop is to learn about your whole body, not just the curves of your spine.

Take a moment to look in the mirror with curiosity. Which hip is higher? Which shoulder rolls forward?

Look down at your feet every now and then. Is one consistently more forward? Does one turn out?

The more you look, with love and curiosity, the more you will learn about your body. Where your body lives, how it moves, how it compensates. This information will not only help you to understand your how your body lives with scoliosis but it will also help you to best execute your scoliosis specific exercises.
