Sitali and Sitkari breathing. These are mouth
breathing techniques that we use in yoga. Sitali breathwork is inhaling through the mouth with
your curled tongue sticking out slightly and exhaling through the mouth. It is known as a cooling breath and a calming breath.

Since it’s Caregiver Appreciation Month, we wanted to highlight one of the valuable resources available to caregivers in our community. The Hamilton Brain Injury Association offers a free Spouse Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of every month. If you or someone you know is supporting a spouse with a brain injury, this is a wonderful place to connect, share, and feel supported.

Thoraco-Abdominal Breathing
Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down. Bring your attention to your chest as you inhale, and to your lower belly as you exhale. You may place a hand or small object on these areas to help guide your awareness.

Breathe in gently through your nose, smooth, subtle breaths flowing down the throat and filling the lungs. Pause briefly, then release the belly and exhale by drawing your lower abdominal muscles inward and upward, slowly and steadily.

Repeat this cycle.

If nasal breathing feels difficult, don’t worry, two mouth breathing techniques and methods to help clear the nostrils will be shared soon.
