January is Glaucoma Awareness Month.
Did you know there are 4 different types of glaucoma? Every type of this disease can go unnoticed by the affected patient until it has progressed to a point where it cannot be treated. There is no cure for glaucoma, and it is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canadians. It is also known as the Silent Theft of Sight.
Glaucoma can also be genetic, so those with a family history of the disease should be seen by an optometrist on a regular basis. Whether you have a family history or not - the best way to catch this eye disease early enough to slow the progression is with regular eye examinations!

**HOLIDAY HOURS**
Our office will only be open for patients to pick up their contact lenses. There is no doctor on site until January 7th. If you wish to book an appointment or order contact lenses, please do so by calling the office or using our contact lens order form on our website. Forsight Eyewear will be closed at our location between December 25th and January 1st. Any glasses inquiries during that time will be directed to their Upper James locations.

Don't wait until it's too late! Appointments are filling up quickly but we still have the mentioned dates available. There will be no doctor on site between December 20th and January 4th, so now is the time to get that end-of-year eye examination in!

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY - Both Clearview Eyecare and have updated hours for the winter. Our weekdays are shortened from 6:00pm to 5:00pm, and Saturdays have been extended from 2:00pm to 4:00pm! Notice will be provided when our hours change again. Otherwise, our holiday hours will be posted within the next few weeks!

Looking to complete your Halloween costume with some spooky contact lenses? There are some things you should know about theatrical contact lenses before trying them out!
There are risks that come with wearing contact lenses for Halloween. If you are not currently a contact lens wearer, it is NOT RECOMMENDED to try theatrical contact lenses. Theatrical, or "costume" contact lenses are not the same as prescription contact lenses, as they are sold over-the-counter as "one size fits all". Improperly fitted contact lenses and not prescription contact lenses pose a huge risk including:
- eye infections
- corneal ulcers and abrasions
- allergic reactions
- vision loss, which can be PERMANENT!
If you're looking to complete your look with some colour contact lenses, it's always in your best interest to get a proper contact lens prescription and purchase them from your eye doctor!

When it comes to vision issues with children, some of the signs are more obvious, like squinting or holding a book too close. Other times, though, it can be harder to catch. But there's good news! OHIP covers yearly eye examinations for children under the age of 20. Babies as young as 6 months are eligible for eye tests, and some eye conditions (like "lazy eye" and "crossed eyes") can be reversed if treatment is started early!

The new school year is quickly approaching, and appointments are filling up quickly! Add an eye examination to the top of your children's back-to-school list and set them up for success. Children 19 and under are covered under OHIP every single year, so why wait? Set them up today!!
