WARMING SOCKS TECHNIQUE:

I caught a cold this week. Not good timing for my project - but I am using this time to plan and rest and not worry that I am not creating videos.

Instead I figured it was a good day to tell you about a
technique I learned when I was living in Vancouver over 20 years ago that I
use whenever I get a sore throat: THE WARMING SOCKS TECHNIQUE. I learned it
from a naturopathic doctor I was seeing in 2001 and I have used it with
every cold since. I still have a cold, but the itchy, sore throat is gone.

Here are the instructions I got over 20 years ago and still follow today
with my own change due to my wool allergy:

1. Make sure your feet are warm first - if they are not warm - soak
them in warm/hot water for 5-10 minutes to warm them up first. THIS IS
IMPORTANT! I sometimes take a hot shower.
2. Soak 1 pair of light/medium weight cotton socks in cold water, wring
them out, and put them on.
3. Put a DRY pair of heavy wool socks (I am allergic to wool so I just
use heavy cotton socks) on over top of the wet socks.
4. Go to bed. Leave the socks on while you sleep. (If you wake up
really HOT because your feet are dry - you can remove them).

Benefits I was taught:

* Increases circulation.
* Decreases congestion in upper respiratory passages.
* Can be relaxing and sedating - I sleep like a BABY.
* Said to be good for pain relief too - haven’t tried this though -
let us know if you try it.

Notes:

* It feels weird for a few minutes, but soon you will not notice.
* For a bad sore throat I have had to do it a few nights in a row -
but it feels much better daily.
* I have used this as preventative as well - while traveling with
someone who had a sore throat to prevent me from getting one - from that ONE EXPERIENCE - it worked. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aw shucks… thx for getting it ☺️

HOW TO STOP A PANIC ATTACK.

The best way that I know to stop a panic attack is to dive right into it. That might sound crazy but follow me here:

If you are having a full on attack: rapid heart rate, sweating and racing heart… and you try to push the thoughts away, it likely won’t work. Your nervous system is not rational.

Here I need to stop myself and I say, “ok… time to dive in.” Oh yes, I have anxiety too!! Then, ask yourself if something happened. Usually something did. Here is an example of how I used this when I had a panic attack when a mechanic called me:

I feel anxious because the mechanic called and my car needs new brakes - $800 and new tires - $1500.

You may dismiss it as not wanting to spend money - but you are likely anxious for more of a reason - see if you can find it/dive in with me:

Why is the call stressful?
Is it the money?
Is it the shock?
How does it make you feel?

The call was stressful because the man made me feel like an idiot, and I didn’t really trust him. I’ve had experiences where I have been taken advantage of. This interaction has made me angry and anxious.

Money - when I dive in - it’s actually not the money at all. This car has cost me very little so it was bound to happen. I have also saved for the tires.

Wow yes I am a tiny bit shocked by it all and feel like I have lost control of everything.

This experience has made me feel like I can’t handle my car as a woman and I hate having to deal with sexist men - it brings up years of frustrating conversations where I have been silenced and it makes me angry. I also remember a time where I went into debt over a car and had to get a loan - and then the car died and I still had the loan. I felt really stupid. So yes, this call has made me feel angry and stupid because it brought up past experiences.

I normally find that right here… the panic attack subsides. I haven’t solved my problem - but realizing what feelings and memories you are actually dealing with can help reduce, or even fully stop, the anxiety or panic attack.

If you couldn’t find a reason for your situation - I will deal with that in a future post.

EIGHTEEN YEARS.

I have been teaching yoga for eighteen years and practicing yoga for twenty-six. First how is that possible when I am only 29 😏?

Over 10 years ago I took my understanding of the practice and my research into trauma and anxiety and combined the two into a Yoga for Anxiety class. For 10 years I have been teaching in-person and zoom classes to people with anxiety and it is my truest love.

This method helps you:

ॐ Understand the source of anxiety.
ॐ See how the body holds anxiety and what this really means (not froufrou).
ॐ Make the connections you need to start to heal yourself.
ॐ S L E E P.

The online program is in the works and coming soon - hopefully by early May 2022. For now you can catch me on zoom on Friday Nights at 5:30pm. I guess it’s time to put a link in my bio.
