June marks National Indigenous Histories Month, a time to celebrate the rich cultures and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, commemorate their ongoing experiences on Turtle Island and meaningfully engage in reconciliation work. The AOM and Indigenous Midwifery team are committed to supporting the restoration and renewal of Indigenous midwifery practices. The vision of bringing birth home is about restoring Indigenous sovereignty over one of life's most fundamental experiences. It's about healing historical trauma, strengthening families and ensuring Indigenous babies enter this world surrounded by their culture, language and community's love. Together, we can work toward a future where every First Nations, Inuit and Métis family has access to culturally safe, community-based care that honours their traditions while ensuring the highest standards of care.

Happy mother’s day to all the mothers -
To the ones in the thick of it, the ones doing it solo, the ones waiting to become mothers
To the mothers who have lost their children, and the children who have lost their mothers
To chosen mothers, stepmothers, mother-figures, and everyone who’s ever mothered with love.
Today we celebrate you!

Today is World Maternal Mental Health Day, where we come together to raise awareness of perinatal mental health disorders.

🌎 Globally, as many as 1 in 5 women experience some kind of perinatal mental health disorder.
🌎 As many as 7 in 10 women hide or downplay their symptoms.
🌎 Only 25% of those impacted by perinatal mental health disorders receive treatment.

If you need help or support:
🔷 Call or text the PSI HelpLine at 800-944-4773. You never need a diagnosis to ask for help.

Happy !

Today, we honour midwives everywhere—those delivering care in safe clinics and those working in the world’s most challenging crisis settings. From conflict zones to refugee camps, disaster-struck communities to remote villages, midwives are there—saving lives, protecting rights, and delivering dignified care.

This year's theme, Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis, is a powerful reminder: midwives are not only essential health providers—they are crisis responders, advocates, and leaders.

💜 To every midwife in our global community: thank you for your strength, your courage, and your unshakable commitment.

📣 In a world facing more frequent and more intense crises, it’s not a matter of if disaster will strike—but when. And when it does, you want midwives there.

April is Black Maternal Health & Reproductive Justice Month. Racism and chronic stress lead to poorer reproductive and infant health, resulting in higher rates of perinatal depression, preterm births and mortality among Black birthing people and infants.

While Canada has historically left racial demographics out of perinatal data collection, data from the U.S. shows that Black women are 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. Despite differences in health systems between U.S. and Canada, U.S. data is relevant in the Canadian context since socio-economic inequities and systemic racism and discrimination are the primary drivers for poorer health outcomes in both U.S. and Canada.

The AOM is committed to dismantling systemic racism in midwifery. This includes advocating for the systematic, nation-wide collection of race-based data to identify and address disparities caused by systemic discrimination and social determinants.
