Many families choose to commemorate their loved one with a bench memorial.

Often, the decision comes down to how they picture future visits. Not just standing briefly, but sitting together.

It becomes the place grandchildren sit beside a grandparent. The place flowers are set down while stories are shared.

Flat carving and shape carving start from the same foundation, but the finish is noticeably different.

Flat carving is cut into the surface of the granite, removing the polished finish to create clear contrast and defined shapes.

Shape carving builds on that base. Using a smaller sandblast nozzle, the design is worked further to introduce curves and depth. The additional detailing creates shadow and a more dimensional effect.

Both methods are durable and well suited to granite. The difference lies in the level of contour and visual depth you want the design to carry.

Hazel was a goat, but to the youngest son of the Taylor family, she was a beloved companion.

She had a fondness for sunny haystacks, a habit of teasing the chickens, and a way of making the ordinary feel fun.

She passed away with her dear friend Harry gently by her side.

We were honoured to help the Taylors mark Hazel’s place in their family with a custom memorial that reflects the affection, humour, and joy she inspired.

Over the past few months, we completed restoration work on historic memorials at Woodlawn Cemetery in Welland. The project was led by the City of Welland and focused on improving stability while preserving the original character of each monument.

Our work included foundation repairs, careful realignment, and repinning multi-piece stone memorials so they can remain secure and properly supported for years to come.

Each memorial represents a unique life and legacy. We’re grateful for the trust placed in us to care for these important pieces of local history.

Hamilton Cemetery is the oldest municipal cemetery in Canada, with more than 80,000 interments. Although it no longer accepts new interments, it remains an important place for many families, with many returning years later to place a memorial where loved ones now rest together.

We were recently contacted by a client settling her aunt’s estate. She asked us to create a memorial to honour three generations of women in her family: grandmother, mother, and daughter, now resting side by side.

In this case, the last in that family line, Beverly Bodnar, had been deeply community-minded and worked in a local animal shelter. We were honoured to help mark her legacy.

We first made this memorial in 2010. Fifteen years later, we were back to add a new inscription.

The original work was still in beautiful shape. The gold leaf hadn’t dulled, the etching was still clear. Nothing needed restoring, just a new name, carefully added in the same style.

There’s a real sense of pride in seeing something we made this long ago still doing what it was meant to do.

That’s the intention behind every memorial we craft: something families can return to, and rely on, for generations.

After carving the background flat with tooling setback, we often turn to a method called V-cut chiselled lettering for the main inscription.

Crafted entirely by hand, this technique gives each letter a sharp, angled cut, adding clarity and depth to the design.

It’s a refined finish that brings out the shape of the lettering and works especially well with gold leaf.

Not every workshop offers this style of carving. It takes skill, control, and a good understanding of how light interacts with the stone.

People often ask how we get such a clean, flat surface around the lettering on a headstone.

One of our preferred ways is actually a technique called tooling setback, and we do it by hand.

Using a carbide chisel, we carefully carve the area around the design to create a smooth, even background. It helps the letters stand out clearly and gives the whole piece a more defined, finished look.

This is one of the ways we make sure every detail is cared for, start to finish.

As 2026 begins, we want to take a moment to thank our neighbours, clients, and community for your continued trust and connection.

This year marks H&S Memorial Studio’s 97th year. A legacy built through dedicated craft, compassionate care, and commitment across generations.

January is often seen as a slower time, but it is in fact the ideal season to begin planning a memorial. Winter allows for thoughtful decisions, clearer timelines, and ensures that by spring, everything is ready for installation.

It’s also the right moment to get ahead of the seasonal rush, and before new pricing takes effect later this winter.
