On this the last day of Fire Prevention week, it's not too late to take simple but essential precautions regarding fire safety. This year the focus is on taking care when buying, charging and recycling battery-powered devices, specifically the safe use of lithium-ion batteries. Under the banner "Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home," the Hamilton Fire Department is encouraging all residents to pay vigilant attention to these modes of power for laptops, power tools, e-bikes, scooters and other household items. While these batteries are efficient and convenient, they can pose serious fire risks.

Safety tips for residents:
• When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL or CSA. This mark means the product meets important safety standards.
• Charge lithium-ion batteries on a hard, flat surface, away from flammable materials like beds, couches or curtains.
• Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit recycleyourbatteries.ca to find a recycling spot near you.

While this year’s campaign highlights the importance of lithium-ion battery safety, the Hamilton Fire Department also reminds residents that smoke alarms and home escape planning remain critical components of fire prevention for you and your family.

In the event of a fire, having a working smoke alarm is vital.

To stay prepared, residents are encouraged to test smoke alarms every month and regularly practice home fire escape plans with everyone in the household.

Congratulations to the YMCA Men’s Residence which has been recognized with The Spirit of Hope Award from St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation. This honour celebrates organizations that make a lasting difference in the lives of those facing mental health and addiction challenges.

The generous support of the Hamilton community (for example all who helped fundraise this past summer for the 72km Long Walk Home) has helped transform the Men's Residence into far more than a place to stay. It has become a comprehensive ecosystem of care, where every individual receives wraparound supports like physical, mental, and emotional care from a team of dedicated case managers, healthcare partners, and community advocates.

This powerful network of support has benefitted more than 200 men each year find stability, purpose, and belonging.

After the devastating fire that impacted the Men's Residence in 2024, so much good work could have been lost. Instead, it became the beginning of a new chapter for the YMCAHBB community, one built on resilience, generosity, and hope, where the doors of care stayed open and the mission stayed stronger than ever.

This Spirit of Hope Award reminds us of how YMCA Men's Residence is a place where recovery, dignity, and compassion walk hand in hand. Bravo to all who are a part of this meaningful work. 👏

In less than 3-weeks, I am hosting a Ward 7 Open House October 23 at St Catherine of Siena Church, 620 Rymal Road East. Meet City Staff to gather information and ask questions about TWO topics in the same evening:

1/The housing opportunity on 630-640 Rymal Road East for potentially two 12-storey residential buildings.
2/The proposed bike lane and multi-use path along Limeridge Road.

The portion of the Open House for Bike Lane/MUP allows residents to consider the following:
Project proposal for a one-sided two-way cycle track along the south side of Limeridge Road between Upper Wentworth Street and Upper Kenilworth Avenue. A Multi-Use Path (MUP) is also proposed along the north side of Limeridge Road between Upper Kenilworth Avenue and the Escarpment Rail Trail. There is a future planned connection from the Escarpment Rail Trail to Mountain Brow Boulevard, which will complete this east-west connection.

Possible FAQ at this Open House:
-Describe the cycling infrastructure being proposed for this
neighborhood
-Possible impact on on-street parking
-Proposal diagrams for Q&A

The portion of the Open House regarding the housing opportunity on 630-640 Rymal Road East for potentially two 12-storey residential buildings offers information about:
- What the affordable housing and the housing spectrum is
- Why 630-640 Rymal Road East is an optimal site for housing
- What's involved with a Zoning By-law Amendment
- Providing feedback on possible precedent development designs
- Providing input on design elements that are important
- Learning about the process ahead and how to stay involved
- Staying in the know on City’s webpage

This meeting will not include:
- Specific designs and related zone change/variances specific details (we don’t know this information just yet)
- Does not provide information about the technical studies that will be prepared
- Is not the mandatory meeting before a Zoning By-law Amendment application is submitted
