Internal Family Systems is not really about families. Here’s why👇
IFS or Internal Family Systems, grew from the idea that we are made up of all different parts - an “internal family” of sorts. Most of our parts have defined roles in our system that either help protect us or hold memories of wounds that we have carried for a long time.
In the same way that children need a healthy attachment figure to role model and support them in making good decisions, our parts need us to lead them.
Our parts don’t always have the full picture of what’s going on in our lives which can sometimes cause reactions or internal narratives to try and keep us safe or well-liked by others 👋hello, self-critical parts 👀
When we are able to validate their concerns and understand why they have taken on these roles, we can begin to guide them and respond to our external world from an empowered place.

Wondering how we keep our BODYMIND plant friends happy? Here we’re using a simple homemade neem oil spray to protect them from pesky bugs.
It’s really simple to make at home and only requires 3 ingredients:
🌱Neem oil
🌱Dish detergent
🌱Water
Instructions: Mix 1 litre of warm water with a squirt of dish detergent to create an emulsifier. Add in 1 tsp of neem oil. Shake it up to combine. Spray plants as needed.

Why is it that more often than not life doesn’t always go the way we plan?

Say hello to your sweet little inner critic 🥲💛
Although they don't always feel helpful, these parts of ourselves play an incredibly important role in our system. This role is usually a protective one where this inner critic acts as a buffer between us a more helpless, vulnerable part of ourselves. For example, if I can just work harder, maybe I will finally feel deserving of rest and not have to bump up against the shame that usually comes from taking a break.
Unfortunately, it rarely works so simply.
Next time you feel your inner critic taking charge, instead of getting into a power struggle with them (or beating yourself up for having one, aka another Inner critic within the inner critic 🤣), simply ask yourself - what vulnerable feelings is this critic trying to protect me from?
By noticing and honouring our inner critic's role, instead of immediately pushing them down, we can begin to build a relationship with them. Through this relationship, we can eventually support them in softening back and to trust that *we* are okay and capable of handling these vulnerable feelings. For many of our parts, being witnessed and understood by us is incredibly transformational in itself.
