💫 Let's look at different options of Side Angle Pose 💫

The goal of this pose is not to get your hand to the ground. It's about taking a wide enough stance that you can bend your front knee deeply without going past your ankle. Find a deep stretch through the inner thighs so you can tip your pelvis and find your pose without laterally bending your spine, both sides of your waist should stay equally long.

1. One option - Bend as deeply as you can while keeping weight evenly distributed through the front foot—big toe mound, baby toe mound, and heel. Guide the knee toward the baby toe side and sink the hips straight down between the feet rather than lunging forward.

If placing your elbow on your thigh, press into it and lift out of that shoulder to create space. If your shoulders feel tight, keep the top arm reaching straight up and give your shoulders time to open before trying to take the pose further.

2. In the next option, you can use a block to bring the ground closer to the hand. The opposite hand goes behind the head, the elbow moves backwards towards the wall behind you, and feel the pressing of that shoulder blade flat into the back to open the chest. This is a great way to mobilize the shoulder.

3. Eventually, you may be able to sink the hips low enough to take the hand to the ground, either in front of, or behind, that front foot. Whichever hand position you choose, push the arm into the knee, and the knee into the arm. When you establish equal amounts of force between these two points, you can allow your rib cage and chest to twist open towards the ceiling while the top arm reaches by the face and the palm of the upper arm spins to face the wall behind you, creating external rotation in the shoulder.

4. If you’re playing with a bind, the golden rule is try to create no space between your armpit and your leg. You may even need to round your spine a little bit to get into a good bind. The hand that wraps either grabs the fingers of the opposite hand or the wrist. When the armpits and shoulder are close to the leg, this decreases the risk of injury to that shoulder.

✨ Tuesday Tip: When Things Don’t Go to Plan ✨

Missed the pose, lost your balance, had to rest more than you expected? That is the practice. Yoga isn’t about everything going smoothly—it’s about how we respond when it doesn’t. Each unexpected wobble or pause is an invitation to breathe, soften, and adjust with compassion rather than frustration. Notice what comes up when plans shift, and see if you can meet yourself with curiousity instead of judgment. Those moments of adaptation are where the real practice lives—on and off the mat.

Did you know how much happens behind-the-scenes at De La Sol Yoga?!

To keep the space clean, tidy, and everything running smoothly we have a team of amazing humans that are part of our Energy Exchange Program! These people mop the floors between classes, make our glorious cold towels, help place cold towels on your heads in savasana, make tea, place shoe affirmations, and SO MUCH MORE!!! In exchange they enjoy yoga classes with us ❤️

You may not always see them, they can be quite stealth sometimes 😁 but we are so grateful for their hard work and dedication to the studio! If you do see them around please give them a big thank you for all that they do 🙏

💫 Something new is here for the women out there! 💫

We know that community and coming together is one of the best parts about the yoga studio experience! Now there's another way to connect and learn 🙌

Join in shared learning with other women to build skills, recognize gifts and build confidence in living well!

A Community of Practice focuses on collective learning. Members share stories, tools, and experiences to get better at what they do, while feeling supported and holding themselves accountable to their commitments. This COP is specifically for women with ADHD, including those diagnosed and self-identified, looking for better ways to manage executive functions in a world not built for our brains.

The structure of six bi-weekly sessions over three months is designed to create connection amongst members, build skills in executive functioning, help us feel more grounded and be proud of the gifts our neurodivergent brains bring to the world. A lead facilitator will guide the process, share resources and synthesize progress into a practical resource for sustainability.

About the facilitator: Fellow DSL yogi, Tanja Roglic is a passionate champion of individual and collective development. Tanja pairs her lived experience and many years of supporting ADHD youth with her people development expertise in leading individuals and collectives, as a complement to therapeutic interventions.

Join this community of practice at De La Sol on every other Tuesday - March 24; Apr 7; Apr 21; May 5; May 19; June 2 | 7-9pm | $300+HST

Tuesday Tip: Progress Isn’t Linear 🤍

Some days your body feels spacious and strong. Other days it feels tight, tired, or resistant. Neither means you’re doing it wrong. Yoga isn’t a straight line forward—it’s a spiral of learning, listening, and returning. What matters most isn’t how deep the pose looks, but that you showed up with honesty and care. Let today’s practice be exactly what it needs to be. That’s still progress. 🧘‍♀️✨

Lets look at layers and options of Skandasana (Side Lunge) — a pose of mobility, strength, and awareness.

Begin with feet parallel and grounded. Sit your weight back into the heels so the spine stays long and the shins remain close to vertical. This first stage focuses on gently mobilizing the hips and lengthening the inner thighs without the knees collapsing forward.

As you move deeper, add external rotation through both thighs by turning the feet slightly out. Bend into one knee, guiding it toward the baby-toe side of the foot. It’s okay if the knee passes the toes as long as there’s no pain—keep your centre of gravity low and supported. Rotate the straight leg outward so the toes and kneecap point up toward the ceiling. Use your hands on the floor to reduce strain and support the hips and inner thighs.

To increase the challenge, lift the hands to prayer, draw the chest up, and subtly lift the hips out of the deepest stretch to create stability rather than overstretching. If you’re steady and pain-free, you can explore arm variations or a bind by gently twisting, wrapping the arm around the shin, and opening the opposite shoulder back. Keep the neck long, head stacked over the spine, and add a side gaze only once neutrality is established.

Move slowly. Stay curious. Choose stability over depth. 🧘‍♀️
