The term burnout is often thrown around, but what does it really mean? The Maslach Burnout Inventory measures three domains: exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Using standardized questionnaires can help clients and practitioners to get an objective measurement of their current symptoms and compare them over time. It can also help people to feel validated in their experiences. If you feel you are dealing with burnout I encourage you to talk to your trusted friends or family and consider getting professional help from mental health and medical practitioners. You deserve to feel better!

We all carry varying beliefs about ourselves, that change and evolve over time. It can be hard to speak kindly to ourselves, especially during moments of stress or anxiety or disappointment. And it can also be easy to say - well what’s the point of speaking kindly to myself in moments when I don’t even believe what I’m saying. But this is how I see it - learning to be your own cheerleader matters. Has there ever been a moment when a parent or a loved one spoke kindness to you, and even though you didn’t believe the words yet, hearing it mattered to you, to how your heart felt? Speak this kindness to yourself, even in the darkest hour. Watch how slowly over time the words become a bit more believable as your inner child hears what it longs to hear, from none other but it’s grown up self.

Filling your bucket. This isn’t about “positive thinking” or the cliche of running yourself a bath (although - let’s be real sometimes a bath is pretty damn nice). Stress can be an insidious beast. One day you think you’re juggling all the balls no problem, and then slowly over time you start to notice unrelenting fatigue, or weird body symptoms you’ve never had before, or maybe you’re quicker and quicker to anger. As much as I would love to live in this camping picture I’ve posted and escape our fast paced world, the reality is, it’s not happening any time soon. Finding people and practitioners in your life that can support your life and your body in a sustainable and practical way is a great way to keep that bucket filled … or at least keep it from being totally empty!

What’s that saying? 30 minutes of bright light therapy a day keeps the SAD away? Hmm no that’s too wordy. But if your SAD (short for Seasonal Affective Disorder) lamp is packed away from last winter, and you’re starting to feel those cold month blues creep in, might be time to dust it off! 💡

My body craves nature. How could it not? We are nature too. Being in nature and connecting with the elements is a beautiful way to tend to your heart and your mind. Sometimes when I’m walking with my daughter I hold her hand and have her close her eyes and just ask her to breathe and feel and smell and hear. Tune in to the world around you in new and different ways. This is a perfect time of year to go for a hike, so, if you were looking for a sign to get you going - here it is! 🪄

For my next series of posts, I’m going to focus on an area of passion for me: Mental Health. Many of my patients have dealt with both anxiety and depression. Current research has shown that fish oil can help decrease symptoms associated with both depression and anxiety. What’s nice about this treatment option is that it can often be used alongside those who are already on prescription medications for mood. As always, consult with your healthcare provider to find out if this would be a good option for you!

As I continue to navigate having two small children, and where I see the focus of my naturopathic future heading, I am excited to have joined for at least the next year. There is a wonderful feeling that comes along with being in a community of like minded professionals (in this case, those who are passionate about evidence based medicine in Naturopathy and also in supporting one another!).

I am still seeing patients virtually on a part time basis while I continue to explore the various ways to offer my services to the community. If you’re ever interested, just shoot me an email at info@madeleineelton.com
