Just in time for the holidays! Meditation is the topic of this months support group!

Gen Kelsang Rabgye, resident teacher at Samudra Kadampa Buddhist Centre in Hamilton.

This seminar will include an explanation of meditation - its purpose, function, and benefits as well as an explanation on how to meditate, how to develop and maintain concentration, and faults to avoid.

Mollyparkerpt great infographic timing!

For those recovering from concussion symptoms the holidays can be overwhelming.

So here are a few tips to help you enjoy this holiday season:
🔹️Set Boundaries and Expectations
~BOUNDARIES are "what's ok and what's not ok" for your emotional/physical wellbeing.

Start by becoming aware of symptom provoking activities and identify what you are able to do and for how long(ish).

Then set the EXPECTATIONS of your loved ones (and you😚) for what you are ABLE to do.

Ex: your family expects you to stay 2 hours late to clean up but you know you won't make it past dinner... state what can be expected from you while supporting your health.
🔹️ Incorporate Quality Rest
~Well placed quality rest helps support the brain from becoming overstimulated or "crashing."

Quality rest may include meditation, breathing, brainwave entrainment or quietly resting in a low stimulus environment.
🔹️Be Mindful of High Stimulus Environments
~The more the brain has to process, the faster it fatigues during recovery. This applies to physical environments and giving energy emotionally.

Try to spread out high stimulus activities and set yourself up for success by opting for:
•quieter spot vs right by the music
•natural/low light vs fluorescent/flashing lights
•face away from the chaos vs standing in the middle of it
•smaller easier conversions vs a big group
🔹️Discuss Planning and Pacing with Loved Ones
After you have identified your boundaries and expectations, discuss how you will plan and pace the holidays with your loved ones. This will further establish your boundaries and expectations as well as set you up with a game plan for a successful holiday.

Many don't understand how taxing social events can for the brain. Clear conversations prior can limit frustrations on both sides.

🔹️Choose Activities that Bring Joy
What fills you up? While managing physical symptoms is important, it's also important to feel emotionally full while moving through the rehab process.

So give yourself permission to enjoy time with the people you love when it serves your overall well being.

🧠I hope you find this helpful!

Happy holidays💋

people who have fallen once in the last 6 months are more likely to fall again? What can you do about it?

The government of Canada has some tips! Be prepared if it happens to you or if you witness someone else fall. https://bit.ly/33mDg2z

We all fall from time to time. With age, both the numbers and the likelihood of injury increase. So, it is important to know what to do if you fall or if you see someone else fall. Reacting properly to a fall can make the difference between a serious fall and a less serious one.

disc herniations are common in people without pain! And they can heal over time?

Disc herniations can heal! 😊💪
Great post by ! 😊👍
“One of the issues I get the most questions on is low back pain, especially disc herniations. While there is a lot that goes into this question, two things I usually mention are that disc herniations are common in much of the asymptomatic population and that they can heal with time and conservative treatment.
The article cited below and presented in the image sought to determine the probability of spontaneous disc regression among each type of lumbar herniated disc.
-
What did they find⁉️ Spontaneous regression of herniated disc tissue can occur, and can completely resolve after conservative treatment.
-
✅Data by herniation type were as follows: The rate of spontaneous regression was found to be:
1️⃣96% for disc sequestration
2️⃣70% for disc extrusion
3️⃣41% for disc protrusion
4️⃣13% for disc bulging.
👉The rate of complete resolution of disc herniation was 43% for sequestrated discs and 15% for extruded discs.

Looking after your body is crucial, not just for the sake of your physical health, but also for your mental state and quality of life. As most of us already know, taking care of yourself consists of a variety of things such as exercising and eating right, but taking care of yourself also means doing everything in your power to ensure you live a life beyond physical limitations. Physiotherapists want nothing more than for each client they come into contact with, whether it be human or animal, to be healthy, strong, stable and able to live their lives to the fullest. This is exactly why visiting a physiotherapist is a huge element in self care. If you want to learn more about what it is that physiotherapists do, and find out how to access one, visit https://physiocanhelp.ca/
