There is a link between hearing loss and cardiovascular health. Wearing hearing aids is associated with better heart health. In a 10-year study of nearly 4,000 British men age 63 to 85 who were living in the community, men with untreated hearing loss were more than a third more likely to have a stroke or heart attack and to die of a cardiovascular event than men without hearing issues, but wearing a hearing aid lowered their risk. It's not clear why hearing aids were linked to a lower heart disease risk, though it may indicate that these men are taking better care of their health overall.

Hearing loss can lead to a number of health problems, like atrophy (wasting away) of the brain. Atrophy can lead to more serious health complications and challenges, including dementia, seizures, disorientation, loss of coordination, and difficulty communicating.
Hearing aids can help with these challenges. When you improve your hearing, you exercise your brain more, and decrease your risk of atrophy. Other benefits of hearing aids include:
• Decreases the strain of hearing through the amplification of sound
• Filters out background noise to improve listening to the television or having a conversation
• Minimizes ringing or buzzing sounds experienced by those with tinnitus
• Improves communication skills and understanding conversations
• Increases independence
• Decreases risk of falling

Hearing Health in Autumn

The cold weather has a greater effect on our ears than one might realize. As extremities with little to no fat, the ears are two body parts most susceptible to the cold. As such, earwax tends to harden and trap moisture inside the canal to protect them from the cold. Unfortunately, this mechanism can lead to impacted earwax and related health issues like tinnitus, vertigo, and ear infection.
Protecting your ears this fall starts with staying healthy. Drink plenty of fluids, eat vitamin C, and keep warm. To avoid the adverse effects the cold can have on your ears, you might want to invest in a snug, over-the-ears hat or earmuffs. If you think you will enter a high-decibel environment, you can be safe rather than sorry and carry ear protection with you. Your efforts will help you maintain healthy hearing for years to come.

Tips for Making Thanksgiving Dinner Hearing Loss Friendly
For people with hearing loss holidays can also often be fraught with anxiety as they may be uncertain about their ability to be able to follow the dinner conversation, or if they will be excluded, and how tired they may become trying to follow the conversation. Here are some tips to make Thanksgiving a positive experience for everyone.
Set a hearing friendly holiday dinner table by sitting at the center of the table. This allows you to be physically close to as many people as possible. Try to sit with your back to a wall to eliminate unwanted background noise from behind.
Keep the noise down and the lights up - Background noise makes it hard to follow conversation for people with hearing loss. Adequate light is needed for speech reading.
Use your technology tools – Wear your hearing aids.
Take breaks - Despite your best efforts, listening fatigue is likely to set in at some point, so excuse yourself from the table at times to rejuvenate yourself.
Use visual cues - If you are having trouble hearing, cupping your hand behind your ear is a great way to get the speaker to talk louder without interrupting the flow of the conversation..
Have reasonable expectations - Hearing a group conversation at a large table is almost impossible for many people with hearing loss. Focus on conversing with those seated next to you and talk with others seated farther away at a later time. Smile and enjoy!

Why Hearing Loss and Falls are Connected

A growing body of research suggests that hearing loss contributes to falls, but that hearing aids can be a useful preventative tool. A 2023 study shows that consistent use of hearing aids is associated with a lower risk of experiencing a fall in older adults with hearing loss. The research was conducted by University of Colorado-Anschutz Medical Campus.
Reasons hearing loss may increase risk of falling
1. Hearing taps your brain reserves. If you’re concentrating harder to interpret sound, you may have less mental resource available for balance.
2. The part of the inner ear that provides sensory information about spatial orientation, motion and equilibrium has a shared location with the part of the inner ear responsible for hearing. There may be connected dysfunctions between the two causing an increased of risk of falling.
3. Decreased hearing may also directly limit one’s access to auditory cues that are needed for environmental awareness. For example, if you can’t hear your footsteps, you may be less likely to sense where you are positioned in relation to other things around you, causing an increased chance of tripping and falling.
4. It actually takes a lot of concentration to maintain your balance. Researchers think that cognitive overload may play a part in falling. For the most part, the brain can only focus on one thing at a time. People with acquired hearing loss have to use more of their mental resources to hear and interpret speech and other sounds. In doing this, they may have to use more of their “brain resources” to hear, which shifts their focus and leaves fewer resources left for maintaining balance.
5. Hearing loss is linked to mood. People may be less alert when caught up in a fog of misery or anxiety. Hearing loss increases the risk of depression. Depression is linked to more falls and those falls tend to deepen depression in another classic bad cycle.

Don’t Ignore Sudden Hearing Loss
Most people do not view sudden hearing loss as a serious problem and
therefore do not seek medical attention. This delay can increase the risk of
permanent hearing loss. Time is of the essence to save your hearing and “you
have about a 10 to14 day window to treat SHL; otherwise the hearing loss
becomes permanent," says Dr. Rauch. "So make sure to see your doctor, or get
a referral to visit an ear, nose, and throat specialist if your hearing goes away for
longer than a day."
SHL is treated with corticosteroids over a two- to three-week period. You can take the drugs orally or via an injection through the eardrum. Some doctors recommend both oral and injected steroids in hopes of increasing the recovery rate. "Remember that if you are used to normal hearing and it suddenly blocks up, that is never okay," says Dr. Rauch. "The sooner you get it checked out, the better. If it is SHL, every day you delay reduces your chance of recovery."

4. How to Test for Sudden Hearing Loss
How can you know the difference between a regular stuffy ear and sudden hearing loss? Try this test:
Hum aloud to yourself. With normal hearing, you hear the sound equally in both ears. If you do this when you have a new loss of hearing in one ear, the humming will shift to one side or the other.
For example, if your right ear is affected and the hum is louder in that ear, then the hearing loss is more likely a conductive loss, and probably due to blockage from a cold or built-up ear wax. (You can simulate this effect by humming while you cover your right ear.) However, if the humming is louder in the left ear, it suggests the right ear hearing loss is due to recent nerve damage, and that requires prompt medical attention.

Strategies for Supporting a Child with Hearing Impairment in School
It’s vital that children with hearing impairments are given the right support as early as possible. If you have a child with a hearing impairment in your class, teaching in a way that fully supports them may seem a daunting prospect, but there is plenty of support and many ideas available.
Classroom equipment
A radio aid is a microphone worn by the teacher that connects to a hearing aid and can also be passed to other pupils during activities such as group reading. This will help the child to feel part of the class and ensure that they don’t miss any important information.
Dedicated staff
For schools that have the budget to employ one, a communication support worker or learning support assistant can provide hugely valuable help.
Teaching
Make sure that you don’t turn away from the class while talking and ensure that the child has understood every task or instruction. You can also sit the child right at the front of the class to give them the best possible chance of learning as hearing technologies only have an optimal range of one to three metres.
Meet with parents regularly
Having an open line of communication with the child’s parents will help to ensure that the child has consistent support both at school and home. Often the child may be confiding in the parents about issues that they are struggling with which they are too embarrassed to bring up in the classroom.
A ‘hearing buddy’
If the child has to take off their hearing aid at any point during the day (for example during a sports lesson) you can allocate them a ‘hearing buddy’ (perhaps their closest friend) who can help to repeat any information that the child may have missed.

How Can I Spot Signs of Hearing Impairment in a Child?
While hearing impairments are often identified in babies, they may not develop or make themselves known for several years. This means that it’s important to keep an eye out for the signs of hearing impairment in the classroom, particularly in young children. Here are some of the common signs of hearing impairments that you can look for in young children:
• Not responding when their name is called
• Problems with concentration, excessive tiredness and frustration with work that starts to affect their behaviour
• Watching your lips intently as you speak
• Speaking too loudly or too quietly
• Watching others do something before attempting it themselves
• Becoming increasingly withdrawn from others in the classroom
• Delayed speech and communication development
• Mishearing or mispronouncing words
• Not being able to hear what’s happening if there is any background noise
• Difficulty with reading and linking it to speech
