Bullying doesn't just hurt in the moment. It can leave lasting impacts on mental health that follow young people into adulthood. Anxiety, depression, and struggles with self-worth often have roots in these early experiences.

Healing should be available to everyone who needs it, not just those who can afford it. This Pink Shirt Day, we're committed to advocating for accessible mental health support for everyone of all ages. Every child and teen deserves the chance to heal, grow, and thrive, regardless of their family's income.

One of the most common questions we hear is, “How much does therapy cost, and what’s covered?”

Navigating mental health care in Ontario can feel confusing, especially when you’re already carrying a lot. This post offers a clear breakdown of therapy costs, insurance coverage, and support options, so you know what to expect before you reach out.

If cost feels like a barrier, we encourage you to ask questions. Our team is always happy to talk through fees, insurance, and available options with care and transparency.

Looking for support around addiction can feel overwhelming. You may not know where to begin, who to reach out to, or what kind of care might be right for you or someone you love.

This guide offers a simple overview of finding support for addiction:

🔵 Detox (Withdrawal Management)
🔵 Inpatient treatment (Rehab)
🔵 Outpatient programs
🔵 Peer-led support groups
🔵 Counselling for individuals, couples, and families

You do not have to have everything figured out to take a first step. Support exists, and help is available.

Save this post for when you need it, or share it with someone who may benefit.

Today is often called Blue Monday, the so-called most depressing day of the year. But the idea of Blue Monday actually came from a travel company’s marketing campaign in 2005. It isn’t based on science or mental health data.

That said, January can still be genuinely difficult. The holidays are over. The days are short and cold. Financial stress can linger. Resolutions may already feel out of reach. And for many people, seasonal patterns make the winter months especially hard.

So while Blue Monday itself may be manufactured, the feelings people experience in January are very real.

If this season has been heavy for you, please know that support is available. You don’t need a label, a crisis, or a trending topic to reach out. At Shalem, we’re here on Blue Monday and every other day too.

If you need support, call us toll-free at 866-347-0041 or email office@shalemnetwork.org.

This is more than just an office. It's a space where healing begins. A place to set down what you've been carrying. Where silence is allowed and tears are welcome. Where you don't have to perform or pretend.

At Shalem, we believe that relationship is foundational to healing. That means showing up with presence, empathy, and genuine care for who you are and what you're going through. We understand that the first step through our doors can feel scary. But on the other side is someone ready to walk alongside you. Not ahead of you. Not behind you. But with you.

Restoration of hope starts here.

What if we've been asking the wrong question about addiction? Instead of, "Why can't they just stop?" we should be asking, "What pain are they trying to escape?"

Addiction is often misunderstood as a moral failure or a lack of willpower. But research tells us something different. Addiction is a coping mechanism, a way of managing overwhelming pain. It is comfort-seeking behaviour that works in the moment. Sometimes, the relief it brings can feel stronger than the consequences.

In our latest Mental Health Matters article, we explore:
🔵 Why addiction is connected to trauma and mental health
🔵 How compassion changes everything
🔵 Treatment options in Hamilton and beyond
🔵 How to support yourself or a loved one
