Shalem Mental Health Network We seek to restore hope. Overview
Shalem offers two ways of accompaniment:

Individual, couple and family counselling.

A non-profit mental health agency based in Hamilton, we have responded to the needs of our community and across Canada by offering innovative programming like therapy, community education and other services for over 60 years. This includes specialized therapy for children and youth who struggle with attachment disorders and their caregivers. We deeply honour and respect all those who embark on a journey of healing. Equipping and supporting communities,
including faith communities, to better embrace the needs of people who struggle with emotional distress and/or mental illness.

As we wrap up Restorative Justice Week, we’re reflecting on the power of healing, connection, and accountability in our communities.

Shalem’s FaithCare Restorative Practice supports faith communities in navigating conflict and restoring relationships through guided conversations, listening circles, and training. This approach helps congregations build trust, foster belonging, and address harm in a safe, structured way, so that everyone has a voice, and communities can grow stronger together.

It’s Restorative Justice Week in Canada. It's a time to imagine responses to harm that restore safety, dignity, and connection.

At Shalem, our Roads to Repair program offers pathways to justice and healing outside of the traditional justice system after incidents of intimate partner violence.

This survivor-centred, person-led approach is designed to create space for accountability, repair, and meaningful change.
It supports individuals, families, and communities in navigating the complex realities of life after harm, without repeating cycles of shame, punishment, or silence.

If you’re interested in learning more about Roads to Repair or exploring whether this process might be right for you or someone you support, please reach out to our Restorative Justice Facilitator, Regina Wiggins, at reginaw@shalemnetwork.org.

Leadership that values humility and authenticity often requires the courage to be seen as imperfect. In a world that rewards control and confidence, choosing vulnerability can feel risky, but it’s where trust, empathy, and true connection are built.

The way we navigate power in relationships can either build connection or create harm. Here are some ways to navigate power thoughtfully:

🔷 Talk about it: Naming what’s happening and speaking openly about power dynamics can help create healthier patterns.
🔷 Call out misuse: When it’s safe, we can address misuses of power and invite others into more respectful, collaborative ways of relating.
🔷Recognize limits: In relationships with large imbalances of power, it’s important to understand that change may not be possible on your own. Attempts to shift power can sometimes trigger increased control or intimidation.
🔷 Get support: If power is being used abusively, reaching out to a therapist, women’s shelter, or other trained professionals is often the safest path.

Understanding and responding to power dynamics takes courage and awareness, but it’s an important step toward relationships that are safer, healthier, and more connected.

Mental health affects all of us. We all know someone who’s struggling - it might even be you. Therapy can be life-changing, but cost often stands in the way. With your support, no one has to wait, and no one is turned away.

Your gift goes directly to Shalem, helping provide low-barrier therapy, support for youth through RE-create Art Studio, and care for people of all ages. Every donation matters. Every step counts.

Walk with us. Give what you can. Let’s reach the finish line together and bring hope to our community.

Meet Anne, one of our dedicated team members at Shalem. Anne's passion for supporting faith communities in times of conflict led her to Shalem, where she uses and adapts approaches rooted in the International Institute of Restorative Practices to meet the needs of our community.

Outside of her professional role, Anne enjoys the vibrancy of Toronto, with its diverse range of restaurants, theatres, museums, and art galleries. She carries this guiding reminder into both life and work: “Listen to each other, give each other space, and don’t make assumptions about others.”

We’re proud to highlight Anne as part of our team spotlight series.

Power is present in every relationship. Some patterns rely on control (power-over), while others are built on collaboration and mutual respect (power-with). Understanding these dynamics can help us build relationships that are more grounded, compassionate, and connected.
