As many of us start to return to our routines in January, we may be tempted by ideas about new year's resolutions. Where I am in Canada, these are our darkest and shortest days. For me, this is not an ideal time to start new things or demand more of myself. It is a time where I can settle in to gentleness and intention. During this time of year I ask myself what do I want to welcome in this year and what do I want to release? I establish some loose ideas about what is important to me that can help guide my year - similar to values work in Acceptance and Commitment therapy. Then these values/ intentions/ etc. can work like a compass to direct my decisions throughout the year. Remember- a compass only has 4 cardinal directions, so when you are thinking about what you value or what you want to focus on, don't pick too many (a difficult job for us ADHDers). But this will help us live in alignment with our values and goals and can lead to more happiness and fulfillment.
