✨NEW BLOG POST IS UP!

Artistic Associate, Skye Rogers, details her creative process over her first year in the program, as she worked on her debut dance film. 🎥

“As I write to you today, at the top of my second year with the company, I’m still in the creative mush of it all.

I’m not here to tell you a story of my perfectly smooth, linear process of building this body of work. And frankly, I’m glad that’s not the story I’m telling.

I’m here, if you’ll have me, to let you in on the creative growth and decay of my imperfect process. One that has cycled through break-downs and break-throughs a number of times;
A process of creative compost.

This is the story of a multi-year long project that is still feeding itself on recycled and reclaimed ideas.
One that I still believe in, despite the mess.
One that I hope you can see one day.

This is the story of Peggy.”

Magnolia Hall, built in 1877 in the Gothic Revival style, is a beautiful adaptive re-use of a former church with colourful stained glass windows, stunning woodwork and beautiful gardens. It is now ran as a rental venue by the City of Hamilton, and we feel so lucky to get to host movement in it with the community!

🤗 Hey community! Meet Priyanka, this month’s Neighbourhood Moves facilitator. She might already look familiar... as AK Board Member, and past participant in the hArt Dance Film Series AND Prospects: Here&Now 2025, we are super pumped to bring her teachings to our workshop series!

👣 Priyanka is an emerging Kathak artist, choreographer, vocalist, and dance educator originally from New York, now based in Hamilton, Canada. She began studying Kathak at a young age under Pandita Guru Archana Joglekar and has continued her training for over a decade with her teacher and mentor Parul Shah. Priyanka has also trained in Bharatanatyam under Smt. Guru Satya Pradeep.
When Priyanka moved to Hamilton in 2022, the city lacked a Kathak community. Since then, she has made it her mission to foster a growing community through teaching at her home and McMaster University. Priyanka’s aim is to raise awareness of Kathak and strengthen Hamilton’s diverse arts scene.

💌 Join Priyanka on January 31st for Introduction to Kathak at Magnolia Hall, and participate in embodied learning of the North Indian classical dance form known for its rhythmic footwork, expressive storytelling, and dynamic play between structure and improvisation.

🌟The Holidays are just around the corner… and so is our final Neighbourhood Moves workshop of the year!! We thought we’d introduce ya to this month’s venue... the iconic Cotton Factory 🌟

The Cotton Factory is a Creative Industries complex in East Hamilton. In the heart of lower Hamilton, this former cotton mill built in 1900 is a prime example of adaptive reuse. The former site of the Imperial Cotton Co. has been transformed into a creative industries complex, with space for workshops, studios for artists and office space for creative professionals. Film and TV productions, photographers and special events are also drawn to the building by its unique aesthetic and its historic charm.

We hope you can enjoy this unique space with us as we move & groove through that odd time between Christmas and New Years 🌀
