"We had almost four years with Sawyer. At five months old, her seizure and diagnosis journey began. It wasn’t until she was 18 months old that she was diagnosed with DNM1 – a rare neurological condition resulting in catastrophic seizures in infancy and throughout her life.
Our universe happily revolved around her daily care, medical appointments and therapies, we tried to make every day an adventure and did our best to give our girl the best life possible. One of our favourite memories is packing up Sawyer with all of her equipment and supplies and taking a road trip down to Florida and experiencing Disney together, as a family.
In the late summer of 2020, Sawyer began to have some difficulties, and we were faced with some tough decisions. We quickly moved back ‘home’ with family and created a hospice-like environment for Sawyer. With the support of our family, friends, Dr. Ambis, Dr. Lysecki, and the QOLA team at McMaster, Sawyer’s last days were filled with visiting family and loved ones, taking family photos, and endless cuddling. Mostly, we lived and loved. When Sawyer passed away, she was in her own bed with us beside her and surrounded by family."
A pediatric hospice would ensure families like ours have the support and resources during the various stages of living life with a medically fragile child, from diagnosis to hospital admissions, hospice and grief support.

🌸 The Prebianca family—Connor, Sarah, Camilla (5), and their angel Georgia—experienced both incredible beauty and deep pain. Georgia, diagnosed with Lesch Nyhan Disease at 18 months, fought bravely until just before her 4th birthday. Camilla (Millie) was her loving, gentle sister, and her parents became her devoted caregivers. Their hearts are forever changed by her memory.
During Georgia’s life, caring for her meant making difficult choices. They often had to send Camilla to her grandparents for “breaks,” though it was far from restful, and Camilla just wanted to be with her family. Time together was rare, with Connor taking Millie out while Sarah cared for Georgia.
A hospice like Keaton’s House would have given them the chance to breathe and enjoy family moments without the constant care responsibilities. It will be a sanctuary for families like theirs—offering time to simply be together.

The foundation of the services we will provide at Keaton's House—Paul Paletta Children's Hospice—is built upon the experiences of families who have cared for their seriously ill children. We affectionately call them our 'family circle,' and their voices guide all our planning.
“In our experience, a pediatric hospice that offers both medical respite and palliative care would meet a critical gap in services by establishing lifelong relationships with families of medically fragile children from birth to death. As is often stated, it takes a village to raise a child. This is especially true for these special kiddos. A pediatric hospice must be part of the village!”

And they are off!! Hike for Hospice 2024!
It was important for Deputy Premier of Ontario and Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones, to deliver a message that could be widely shared with the board, staff, partners, volunteers, supporters, donors and future supporters of Kemp Care Network. She explains clearly that the Province is in lock-step with the build of Keaton’s House-Paul Paletta Children’s Hospice.
Have a listen to hear about the approval of both capital and operational funding that the Government of Ontario has committed.
Thank you Minister Jones, for your advocacy and support to bring a children’s hospice to Hamilton and for all the strong support your government has demonstrated to palliative care in Ontario.

On Thursday May 23rd our focus on key partners, the Province of Ontario and the City of Hamilton, highlighted the vital role they play in realizing the dream of Keaton’s House - Paul Paletta Children’s Hospice.
However, this dream could not be a reality without the incredible generosity of our donors. Donors are critical partners. We were overjoyed to celebrate with many donors in person and in spirit, as well as so many in attendance who will become future donor partners. Your support is what makes both yesterday’s achievements and tomorrow’s possibilities come to life. Thank you for your unwavering commitment.

What do you want to hear first? The good news, or the good news?
Kemp Care Network only had good news to share yesterday- a day of deep pride, a culmination of years of work by so many and a galvanizing of partnerships.
On May 23, 2024 a great milestone was celebrated: the ceremonial ground-breaking of Keaton’s House – Paul Paletta Children’s Hospice on it’s future home at 41 South St. West.
Two very significant pieces of news were delivered that day. MPP Donna Skelly, on behalf of Minster Jones and Premier Ford, announced the approval of $2.5M in capital funding and annual operational funding of over $2M once the doors open in 2026. Mayor Horwath delivered the news that Hamilton’s City Council unanimously voted to ratify the details of a kind and fair long-term lease for the land.
At the end of this journey, when we prepare to cut the ribbon at the threshold, it will be a clear reflection that the doors are opening because of partnerships. Partners like McMaster Children’s Hospital, City of Hamilton, Province of Ontario, many community organizations, supporters, friends and, perhaps most importantly, donors.
Today is a wonderful day: dream, design, build and connect so that in 2026, together, we will change the landscape for seriously ill children and their families for a century and beyond.

Kathy Adam’s from our Bereavement Support Team shares an inspirational reading and some ideas to celebrate and remember Dads that are no longer with us.
Father's day can bring up many memories and emotions. You might be a child who no longer has a parent or a father whose child is at end of life or passed away. This day may have been a day full of mixed emotions. Everything you feel is ok and it doesn't have to always make sense or be figured out. Know that you are not alone.
