In March I met this amazing group of women who have become my friends. These pictures from May and Sept at two of our 5 in person teacher training sessions. We also met on zoom for exam prep with our instructor totalling almost 100 hours of instruction time. On Oct 14 we will all have our practical exam and Caitlin Bovee owner and Master Trainer at Pilates in Guelph will have created 7 amazing and fully qualified new Boday Harmonics Level 2 Reformer Instructors. I am so excited to check this off my bucket list and move forward with my Pilates career!

This is my Reformer Training study station for the next two days! July 8th is going to be here in the blink of an eye so I’m taking this time for just me to absorb and focus on my passion and prepare for my written exam. I’m on a quest to continue to improve as a Pilates Instructor and also as a Personal Trainer. Teaching people how to move better has always been a passion of mine. I can’t wait to be able to empower more people and help them feel better in their bodies as we master the reformer together. My classes are still happening today and tomorrow via zoom.

Be Fit With Laura was born from my passion for movement and people. After years of experience in private, corporate and public fitness facilities not only leading fitness but coordinating volunteers and doing administation at a desk, it was finally time to break away and do what I do best.
As a kid I loved to swim and was dancing jazz and tap and being a pool rat in my hometown of Hespeler, in Cambridge, Ontario. As a lifeguard at the local pool the manager requested I teach the Aquafit classes because of my dance background. To me, music and movement was so much fun and from there I submurged myself into becoming a group fitness instructor. I did this all the way through highschool and at the Canada Games Complex in Thunder Bay, Ontario where I attended Lakehead University from 1991-95.
After travelling to teach English for a year or so in South Korea I found myself in Toronto with my (almost) husband. I was not sure what I wanted to do with my degree and in the City of Toronto, my Outdoor Recreation Background wasn’t calling to me. Instead I slid into a job as the receptionist at the gym I was working out at. I didn’t even know there was such thing as a personal trainer before then. But when the manager asked me what I really wanted to be doing, I replied. I want to be a personal trainer.
With the guidance of some great people at The Parkview Club which was part of The Sports Clubs of Canada I registered for Professional Personal Training School at Ryerson and then took the CPTN written and practical exams. By the end of the year my positon at the club had changed from receptionist to personal trainer. I hired a trainer as well and she became a great mentor.
My husband and I decided to move back to the Waterloo Region in 2002 and we have raised our two daughters here. I began Be Fit With Laura after a final “job” with Health Systems Group, a corporate fitness company that had a contract with SunLife in Waterloo. It was a fun group of people but I was behind a desk for the better part of the day and when my contract there was up, the manager told me that I was such a great trainer, that’s what I needed to be doing full time.
At that point in time the Ontario Government had a fantastic program with funding for small business and they allowed me to participate in it while building my business. Because we were in Cambridge I was able to reconnect with so many people I knew and my business took off, mostly through word of mouth.
Around the same time I had experienced some post partum blues and decided to take up Pilates. It was like a massive ray of light was filling me up and making me shine. Pilates took me out of my slump and not only helped me get my energy and mood back up but it just made me so happy. Pilates clicked, I entered a state of flow while I was participating. My pilates instructor was an amazing lady that taught so well and was so dynamic that I asked her where I should go to learn to teach that way. I immediately went to Toronto to complete my Pilates Mat training at Body Harmonics Teacher Training Studio. Shortly after I started teaching, my instructor moved away, and I stepped in to her shoes and begand to teach a number of the classes that she had been teaching, inlcuding my own class. I was so nervouse but I am proud to say that a number of those pilates students are still with me today.
I do still have in home personal training clients and they are very important to me but when I teach a pilates class I feel like I have found my purpose. Pilates creates so much connection to how people move, how we move dictates how we feel and ultimately how long we will live. I continue to seek out ways to improve my level of instruction and the study of the neurology of strength through Z-Health has helped me take this even further. I look forward to teaching pilates classes until I am 90 years old. I hope you will join me on The Pilates Path and Be Fit With Laura.
