It’s , and this week’s photo was submitted by Matthew Jones!

He and his son Zachary love to explore, and they make sure to keep safety a priority wherever they go. Even the most calm, clear waters can have hidden dangers, so when Matthew and Zachary are exploring lakes, they know to be by wearing their lifejackets!

Take part in our contest this summer by sharing YOUR tips and stories! Each week, we’ll showcase our favourite entries, and the submission that receives the most engagement by July 31 will win a mystery bag of merch such as tumblers, backpacks, stickers, bucket hats, and more!

This year, the May long weekend coincides with 2025, which runs from May 17 - 23.
has lots of helpful boating safety tips on their website, and we wanted to share some of our own!

If you're planning to spend the long weekend on your boat, be sure to keep these tips in mind to make the water a safer place for everyone!

Wear a Lifejacket:
- Even if you're a good swimmer, you should always wear your lifejacket in a boat. Make sure to choose one that's in good condition, Transport Canada approved, and the proper size to support your weight.

Check the Weather Conditions:
- Know before you go! Keep an eye on the weather to avoid boating in potentially dangerous conditions.

Drive Responsibly:
- Drive at moderate speeds, and use proper lights after dark.

Pack a Safety Kit
- Your safety kit should include a first aid kit, a bailing bucket, a whistle or horn, a flashlight, and a throw rope.

Bring a Buddy:
- Don't boat alone. Boating with a buddy is safer, and more fun!

Boat Sober:
- In Alberta alone, alcohol consumption was found to be a factor in 50% of boating-related fatalities.
- "Don't Drink and Drive" applies to boats, too!

is a public awareness campaign hosted by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association with the aim of promoting safety and wellness for youth on Canadian farms.

When assessing safety risks on the farm, it's important to not overlook potential drowning hazards like ponds, ditches, and dugouts.

According to the latest Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data, drownings accounted for 11% of child agriculture-related fatalities between 1990 and 2020.

In honour of the second annual Kids FarmSafe Week, we want to share some water safety tips to keep in mind when on a farm:

1. Provide Active Supervision
- The majority of child drownings result from a lack of proper supervision. Drowning is silent, and can occur within seconds. So when around water, make sure that your child is within sight AND within arm’s reach at all times.

2. Limit Access to Larger Water Sources
- At the Lifesaving Society, we recommend installing fences or gates around backyard pools to prevent any wandering toddlers from potentially falling in. It's helpful to install barriers like these around large water sources on the farm as well, such as ponds or irrigation ditches, to ensure they aren't easily accessed by children.

3. Get Prepared!
- As many farms are located in rural areas, it may take longer for first responders to reach you in an emergency. Should the worst happen, it's a good idea for parents and other caregivers to get trained in first aid and CPR!

Good to think about

This is a great safety guide for children swimming in lakes and swimming pools. The color of the bathing suit can make it easier or more difficult to see children while they are swimming. This is a good reminder to always have adult supervision when children are swimming. (Thanks to Praire Lakes Healthcare System.)
