Special thanks to Chad Zannotti, PT, CSCS for joining us inside The WELL and sharing his perspectives and insights into the importance of establishing and correcting movement and nutrition habits in young athletes for both injury prevention and recovery.

The WELL is a passion project of mine.

As a coach, I always wished there was ONE space where I could access information and resources to teach my athletes about how to stay healthy.

Better yet, a place where athletes and parents could get involved and take a more active role in their own health and performance journeys.

So far it includes nutrition webinars and resources, yoga and relaxation videos, strength training tips, mindfulness resources and interviews with experts in the fields of health and sport.

What young athletes often THINK we are going to talk about, when it comes to their nutrition.

❌ They are being put on a diet.

❌ They are going to be lectured about vegetables.

❌ They won’t get to enjoy treats anymore.

What we ACTUALLY talk about.

✅ They get to eat MORE.

✅ What to eat at certain times to maximize their performance.

✅ Their individual challenges when it comes to eating enough.

✅ How to ‘rest and digest.’

And honestly…so much more.

We are so caught up in ‘what’ we are eating. 😕

- the calories
- the macros
- the fats
- the diet
- the restricting
- the focus on weight and shape

🙈

When was the last time you considered the HOW. ❓

🔸How present are you when you put food in your mouth?

🔸 Is eating a reaction to a thought or feeling, or is it a choice?

🔸 Do you even taste your food?

🔸 Are you aware that you are chewing?

🔸 Can you notice the textures?

🔸 Can you feel the temperature difference between your utensil and your food?

🔸 Are your thoughts with your food? Or are they off mixed up in your plans or past?

🔸 Can you finish chewing completely before your next bite, or before leaving the table?

🔸 Can you BREATHE?

After last week’s ‘adventure’, and slowly bringing myself back to eating solid foods, I’ve been reminded of the medicine that exists for us when we bring awareness to our eating.

To truly enjoying the experience.

And to allowing ourselves to receive full NOURISHMENT from our food.

Not just calories and nutrients.

But true nourishment of body, mind and soul through BEING IN THE EXPERIENCE of eating.

Part way through my breakfast, I mindlessly grabbed for my phone to check emails.

But I stopped and put my phone down.

I took a deep breath and came back to the abundant sensory experience of being with my food.

And oh my…how wonderful it tasted. ❤️

Nutrition and nourishment is not just the calories or the quality of the food we eat.

It’s a mindful and soulful experience that deserves our attention.

WE deserve our own attention.

Try it. It’s never to late to start. ❤️

I love to watch their eyes…

👀

…when I tell student athletes we are going to talk about nutrition.

🥺😳😵‍💫

I get it.

It’s because most dialogue in the media about nutrition involves restriction.

✔️Eat less.

✔️Cut out sugar.

✔️Stop eating fast food.

While these bullets have merit, restriction tends to create resistance. 😖

So we focus instead on what we can add. 😃

✅More water.

✅More color.

✅Eating more often.

AND also lifestyle pieces like:

✅More enjoyment of food.

✅More intentional rest.

✅More self care.

Eating well doesn’t have to be a drag.

And it doesn’t have to be hard.

It can actually feel great.

And it can be sustainable.

Their eyes on the way out tell the story.

What are your best memories from sport as a kid?



My first memories of are watching my Dad coach volleyball. 🏐

My favorite part was warm up…

When ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ rang like anthems from the crackly gymnasium speakers.

I fell in love with the energy in the gym. ⚡️

Then, when I played volleyball in high school and college, warm up was still my favorite.

Every step I took, every movement with the ball felt like slow motion…my feet hitting the floor in perfect cadence with the bass of my favorite 90’s dance tunes.🎹

25 years later, movement and music still feed my soul. 💫

Of all my years as a player and coach…

Of all the lessons learned and games won and lost…

And of all the things I THOUGHT were important in my sport experience at the time…

It’s warm ups and music that I remember most. ❤️

Life is full of wonderful surprises. 😉

I got a call from a coach yesterday.

He was SO excited.😁

He couldn’t believe the improvement his team had made from the beginning of their season to the end‼️

From the bottom of their division…

To silver at provincials. 🥈

I was so happy for him. 👏🏻👏🏻

Then he told me the biggest difference in getting his team there…

Snacks.

Nutrition.

What we had worked on.

Together. 🤝

And the unique way we approached it to make it easier for the kids. ✅

Which is what is the most important.

Right?

Ps. It’s always good to hear from a really happy customer.

Here’s 3 simple ways to consume less sugar this Easter…

Without feeling like you are depriving yourself.

👏🏻

✅ Consume protein & some healthy fat at breakfast.

✅ Drink 3-4 L of water over the course of the day.

✅ When you consume sweets, eat them slowly and direct all of your attention to the experience, being mindful.

⭐️We get to enjoy the sweetness of this day without guilt AND take care of our bodies at the same time.

Maybe there’s even a learning or two we can extract about our own relationship with sugar.
