Last night we had the privilege of celebrating Dr. Amy Gausvik as she makes her way onto new adventures and hangs up her baby catching hat (or mitt??). Dr. Gausvik has been with the High River Maternity clinic since its creation 19 years ago, and we are so sad to see her go! Lucky us, and lucky families to have had her expertise, kindness and advocacy for rural maternity care for all those years 💕

On May 10, 2024, Debora and Joshua welcomed their baby boy, Alexander, at the High River General Hospital, with the help of the labour and delivery team, midwife Krysta Sears, and water immersion.

“I just felt a lot of freedom being able to move however I wanted that felt more comfortable for me to push him out, or whatever position felt better for my pain management,” Debora says as she reflects on her experience.

Pregnant families sometimes choose water immersion as a birthing option to help manage pain during labour and birth. Currently, water immersion is available at 13 AHS sites that have supports in place to ensure patients and families feel safe and supported before, during and after labour. Efforts are underway to expand this offering to more sites.

For midwife Sears, there is nothing more fulfilling than witnessing the empowerment of childbirth.

“It’s just so cool to see women step into their power, whatever that looks like - waterbirth or c-section, whatever it is,” she says. “Then it trickles through motherhood, right? If you believe in your ability to birth your baby, you inherently believe in your ability to be a mother.”

Sears is one of nearly 170 registered midwives who provide midwifery services through staff appointments with AHS provincewide.

Check out one of our wonderful families who had a beautiful waterbirth this year with midwife Krysta in attendance. Did you know both the midwives and the family doctors at High River Maternity Clinic are trained in waterbirth? We are so lucky to have the best job in the world ❤️

Happy International Day of the Midwife - we are so blessed to be able to walk along side so many families each year - this truly is the best job in the world!

Love your HRMC midwives 💕

Being born is important
You who have stood at the bedposts
and seen a mother on her high harvest day,
the day of the most golden of harvest moons for her.

You who have seen the new wet child
dried behind the ears,
swaddled in soft fresh garments,
pursing its lips and sending a groping mouth
toward ni***es where white milk is ready.

You who have seen this love’s payday
of wild toiling and sweet agonizing.

You know being born is important.
You know that nothing else was ever so important to you.
You understand that the payday of love is so old,
So involved, so traced with circles of the moon,
So cunning with the secrets of the salts of the blood.
It must be older than the moon, older than salt.

Our Story

Midwifery Care at High River Hospital

The Foothills Midwives are unique in that they are the only midwifery practice in Alberta completely integrated in a collaborative practice. This means they are embedded into the scheduled clinic and on-call rotation of the High River Maternity Clinic. As part of the team, the midwives work seamlessly with their obstetrician colleagues in case of an emergency. While at the present time they cannot offer home births, the midwives believe the High River Maternity Clinic’s small numbers and philosophy allow them to create a safe and personal birth atmosphere in a hospital setting. The midwives welcome any returning Foothills Midwifery clients they have been privileged to care for in the past as well as any new clients interested in midwifery care.
