People often assume they know someone’s story from the outside looking in.

But many families affected by FASD are carrying experiences, trauma, stress, guilt, advocacy, exhaustion, and love that others never fully see.

Compassion matters. 💚

support begins early

Sensory processing begins from the very start of life, shaping how babies and young children experience the world around them.

Long before a diagnosis is ever considered, there may be signs that a child is experiencing their environment in a more intense or less predictable way.

Through our Healthy Futures program, we support individuals during pregnancy and early parenting by helping create calmer, more manageable environments—for both child and caregiver.

Small, consistent supports—like predictable routines, lower-stimulation spaces, and practical resources—can make a meaningful difference.

Because support doesn’t begin with a diagnosis.
It begins early, in everyday moments. 💚

you don’t have to navigate this alone

Sensory challenges are often part of daily life for individuals and families living with FASD.

Support, understanding, and connection can make a meaningful difference—and that’s exactly what our caregiver support groups are here to provide.

These groups offer a space to connect, share experiences, and learn from others who understand the complexities of FASD, including sensory challenges.

We also have upcoming opportunities to connect as a community, including our FFAS Golf Tournament on August 17.

If you or someone you know could benefit from support, we encourage you to reach out.

small shifts can change the moment

Once we understand sensory processing, the next step is knowing how to respond.

Support doesn’t need to be complex.
Often, small and consistent adjustments can make a meaningful difference—like reducing noise, offering quiet spaces, allowing breaks, or simplifying tasks.

It’s also about noticing patterns.
When does overwhelm tend to build?
What environments or situations make things harder?

And just as importantly, it’s about staying flexible.
What works one day may not work the next.

Supporting sensory processing isn’t about finding one solution.
It’s about reducing the load on the system so the brain can function more comfortably.

What if it’s not behaviour?

Sensory processing is how the brain takes in and responds to the world—but for individuals with FASD, this system can work differently.

Sounds may feel louder.
Lights may feel brighter.

Everyday environments can feel unpredictable or overwhelming.
What looks like behaviour is often the brain trying to manage more than it can comfortably handle.

When we shift the question from
“Why are they reacting this way?”
to
“What is the brain experiencing right now?”
everything changes.

Understanding sensory processing helps us respond with more support, more intention, and more clarity.

watching it happen

Sometimes, you can see it starting before anything has even gone wrong.

The light feels brighter.
The noise feels louder.
Simple steps begin to tangle.

From the outside, it might look like overreacting, not listening, or not trying.
But underneath, everything is stacking—quietly building until the system reaches its limit.

And then something small happens…
and it looks like that’s the reason.

But it isn’t.
It’s everything that came before it.

There’s a different kind of understanding that comes with seeing that build.
It doesn’t make every moment easy.
But it can help us respond with more calm, more intention, and more support.

And sometimes, that’s enough to change the moment. 💚

right now

Some days, the light feels brighter.
The sounds feel louder.
Things that worked yesterday… don’t today.

Nothing seems like a big deal on its own—
but everything is happening at once.

The brain is trying to sort, filter, and manage
more than it can comfortably hold.

From the outside, it can look sudden.
Like a reaction to one small moment.

But often, it’s not about that moment at all.
It’s the point where everything that came before
has nowhere else to go.

Right now, the system isn’t refusing.
It’s overwhelmed.

And when we understand that,
we can respond with more support,
more patience, and more intention. 💚

Our April edition of Life in the FFAS Lane is here.

This month, we’re exploring sensory processing—what it is, how it shows up, and why the world can sometimes feel like “too much” before the day even begins.
From lived experience to practical strategies, this issue looks at how understanding sensory overwhelm can shift the way we respond—with more clarity, compassion, and support.
