Here’s how I support my family during a gastro attack as a holistic practitioner:
1. Plenty of fluids. I’m grateful my daughter loves coconut water so it’s easy to get her to drink it
2. I keep a 500ml jar in the fridge of freshly juiced lemons with a TON of grated ginger and a few teaspoons of salt - the mixture is ready to go and we add it to our water or make it into a tea
3. Bone broth! The cure to everything. I had some frozen turkey broth - it came out gelatinous - it was beautiful! When that was finished I put a huge pot on the stove with beef bones (always add a generous dash of apple cider vinegar to help pull the collagen out of the bones). I also cook pasta in the bone broth for my daughter to eat - she fills her tummy with something easy and nutrient dense from the broth!
4. Saline rinses always! It’s easy for my husband and I to do. For my daughter; we do a saline nose spray and have her blow her nose after! Keeping nasal passages clean and clear is so key to preventing getting sick or shortening the duration
5. Activated Charcoal: this one might feel a bit rebellious for some. Don’t over use it. Comes in pill form, for my daughter I open ½ a capsule and mix it into something. It has no taste so I’ve even mixed it into sparkling water in a shot glass, place the shot glass at the bottom of her empty water bottle and then have her take a few sips of the sparkling water from her water bottle straw - she doesn’t even realize it’s in there. The colour can be a bit off-setting for kids.
6. Homeopathic Remedies: there’s probably a bunch of other options out there, but this is what I had and rolled with it! They’re easy to take and my daughter calls them “candy”, she likes to crunch them.
Gastro isn’t fun. I don’t wish it on anybody. Thankfully with all of this support, our symptoms didn’t last more than 4 hours!
*None of this is medical advice. I am just sharing as a mom and holistic practitioner what works for my family*
