Do you know the 3 most common reasons autistic children and adults elope, and why it matters?

NASC founder Lori McIlwain has been studying elopement cases for over two decades. She breaks down the 'why' into these 3 common reasons:

1) Elope to Cope: escaping an overwhelming or uncomfortable environment or situation to self-regulate.

2) Elope to Nope: anticipating a trigger, sensory discomfort, or demand and getting out before it hits.

3) Elope to Hope: hoping to reach something preferred: a favorite place, person, object, sensory input, or calm area, such as a nearby body of water.

And often it's a combination. A person might leave a noisy classroom or party and head straight to a nearby body of water.

That's why elopement-related drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among autistic children, and why understanding the 'why' behind it is a matter of life and safety.

Communication is essential to how we live, learn, and connect.
May is , and this year’s theme is Access Changes Everything.
Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) dedicates the month of May to raising public
awareness about communication health.
In Canada, roughly 1 in 10 people experiences a communication disorder. With the right
support, individuals of all ages can build skills, stay connected, and maintain independence.
Access to care is not equal for everyone — particularly in Indigenous communities - many
Canadians continue to face systemic barriers to receiving timely services.

We're moving out of April with a quote NOT from one of our students. As we move into May, we're going to continue amplifying our students' voices (because that's just what we do...) and we're also going to be sharing some must-read resources.

Today, we start with Sincerely, Your Autistic Child

What a difference it makes in our mindset and our teaching when we presume competence in our students and embrace the understanding that what may look like "bad behavior" is quite possibly the response of a brain-body disconnect.

Thank you for joining us this month and sharing our students' voices so widely. Let's keep it up until all those who most need to see these posts have them sprinkled throughout their feeds.
