Please presume competence always! People who use AAC, sign, gestures or other means of communicating can still understand. Assume they do, and interact accordingly.

It can be challenging to have a different neurotype than most people. That doesn't mean that we want to change autistic people to make them more like neurotypical people.

Because one neurotype is not better than any other, our goal should always be to help people feel supported in SAFELY experiencing the world their own way. Better understanding of neurodiversity and acceptance of differences is crucial to achieving that goal.

A neurotype is just one type of brain! There are many different neurotypes, including neurotypical brains (the most common, NOT the best), anxious brains, ADHD brains, autistic brains, and many, many, many more. Neurotypes are not inherently good or bad. They just are.

Autism is not a disease. It is an important part of who someone is.

In last year's "unlearning" series, we talked about ditching functioning labels and why they are insulting (at best) and harmful (at worst).

Oftentimes, people will describe autistic people with lower support needs by saying they are "a little bit" autistic or that some people are "more autistic" than others. I use the "cookie" analogy to talk about this when I speak with groups about neurodiversity.

🍪 Imagine I have a chocolate chip cookie in my hand. How cookie is it? Is it a little bit cookie? A lot cookie? 🍪

Most often, kids will tell me, "It's just a cookie," and that is right! You can have all different types of cookies - chocolate chip, oatmeal, raisin, sprinkle cookies, Oreos - the possibilities are endless! But they are all cookies.

Similarly, if you are autistic, that is your neurotype. You are autistic. There are a multitude of different characteristics of autism, but being a nonspeaking autistic person with physical disabilities, for example, does not make you MORE or LESS autistic than a speaking autistic person who has sensory differences.

April is Autism Acceptance Month!

Why ACCEPTANCE and not AWARENESS, you ask?

Well... because being aware that autism exists is not enough. This month is all about gaining deeper understanding, learning from actually autistic people, and accepting autistic folks for who they truly are. Every day, all year round. 🤝

🥳✨Celebrating 10 Years of Communication! 🥳✨

Can you believe it? Humboldt Speech and Language Services is officially 10 years old! A decade ago, we started with a mission to support families and empower voices in our community. Since then, we’ve had the absolute privilege of watching so many children grow, find their confidence, and share their unique perspectives with the world.

Whether it was a first word, a successful AAC connection, or mastering a tricky sound, we are so grateful to have been a part of your journey.

To celebrate this milestone, we want to highlight the real stars of HSLS: your kids!

We Need Your Favorite "Speech Moments" 🎤
We know that speech therapy often leads to some hilarious, heartwarming, and totally unexpected things being said at home. Did your child pick up a funny phrase? Do they have a unique way of explaining their "speech homework"? Or maybe they had a "breakthrough" moment that made the whole family laugh?
We want to hear them!

How to share: Send us a DM here or email us at humboldtspeech@gmail.com.

The Plan: We will be featuring these "Kid Quotes" and stories in our posts over the next few weeks to keep the celebration going. (All stories will be shared anonymously to respect your family's privacy!)

🥳✨Thank you for trusting us with your children’s care for the last ten years. Here’s to many more years of helping voices grow! 🥳✨
