Christmas and holidays can be an overwhelming and dysregulating time for everyone, especially for those who are sensitive to sensory input and for those who thrive in routine. Holidays usually mean chaos: more social gatherings, more excitement and anticipation, and unpredictiable routines.

If your child is overwhelmed, try to keep your self calm and regulated by breathing and staying quiet. Help your child regulate by offering them the strategies that they usually use, such as noise reducing headphones, heavy work, or fidgets.

Try to also keep in mind what is important about the holidays: family and friends. It is ok if they do not eat the same dinner as the family. It is ok if they need some time alone. It is ok if they stay in their comfy jammies all day.

Most importantly, take care of yourself too!

Huntsville - Sensory Pumpkin Trail and Trick-or-Treating

Come and join Autism Ontario for a sensory-friendly trick-or-treating experience! The Muskoka Heritage Place will be opening half an hour early to allow of families to trick-or-treat with limited people, lights, and sounds. Families are welcome to stay and join the public after 5.
