How often should I be checking my Emergency Drenching Stations?

Emergency showers, eyewash stations, and drench hoses should be checked on a yearly and weekly basis. Checking the drenching station weekly will ensure that the equipment will be in perfect working condition when it is needed. Some problems to test for during the weekly check are leaks, clogs, and breaks in the hoses or equipment. For more items to check, visit our blog for our downloadable weekly checklist.

The location of your emergency shower is a crucial part to ensuring your workers safety. Your emergency shower needs to be located no further away than a 10 second walk from the exposure site. The first 10 – 15 seconds after exposure are crucial to reducing serious injury. The emergency shower should have a clear unobstructed path that can be navigated under any circumstance, such as loss of vision. There should be no hazards near the shower that will put the user at risk.

Knowing if your facility needs a safety shower is the first step to ensure that your workers are safe. According to the Government of Alberta your facility needs a safety shower if workers are present on a work site with chemicals that are harmful to the eyes and skin.

There are three steps to take that will help you determine if you need a safety shower:
1) Audit the workplace to identify hazardous chemicals.
2) Review Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) to see the recommended emergency instructions.
3) Consult Environmental Health and Safety.

Exposure to chemicals can cause damage to the skin and deep tissues. The use of an emergency shower after exposure to an acid has been shown to reduce the risk of a deep tissue burn from 63% to 12.5%. Even with the most well-planned safety practices accidents can happen which makes it important to be as prepared as you can. Providing an ANSI compliant emergency shower not only protects workers but also protects the company from lengthy WCB claims or liability suits.
