Our paramedics proudly wear coloured epaulettes throughout the year to raise awareness and show support for important causes that impact the communities we serve.

Each colour has a special meaning:
Orange - Truth and Reconciliation Day (September)
Green - Mental Health Awareness
Light Blue - Prostate Cancer Awareness (November)
Pink - Breast Cancer Awareness (October)
Dark Blue - Autism Awareness
Rainbow - Pride

This month, you'll see our teams wearing orange epaulettes as a visible sign of reflection and remembrance leading up to Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30. It's one way we show our commitment to honouring survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities.

With students heading back to class, our crews know the roads will be a little busier and sidewalks a little fuller. As paramedics, we see first-hand how a small lapse in attention can lead to serious consequences especially around schools.

A few simple reminders can make a big difference:
šŸ‘€ Stay alert for children walking, biking, or getting off buses.
🐢 Slow down in school zones — seconds saved aren’t worth a life.
🚌 Never pass a school bus with flashing lights.

By taking extra care, you help keep kids safe and help prevent emergencies before they happen. Let’s work together to make this school year a safe one for everyone. šŸ’™

Today is PTSD Awareness Day.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It’s especially common in high-stress professions such as paramedicine, where individuals are exposed to difficult and often distressing situations.

Let’s keep the conversation going. By understanding PTSD and dispelling harmful myths, we can break the stigma and create a more supportive environment for all.

Over the past few weeks, our team has had the chance to connect with several communities across central Alberta:

šŸ“We visited Spruce View School for a career day and was a great chance to chat with students about EMS careers.

šŸ“In Innisfail on May 27, we joined forces with Innisfail Fire and the RCMP for a 'Meet Your Hero event'. It was an awesome day of connection, exploration, and team spirit.

šŸ“And just outside Wetaskiwin, we were part of a creative STEAM event at the Millet Library. The topic? Ramps! The kids raced homemade cars made from juice boxes, axles, and lots of tape… and even raced an ambulance (sort of!). It might have been more of a smash-up derby than a speed race—but the fun was real and ended with ice cream for all 16 racers that joined us!

A few good laughs, a few wild crashes, and a lot of happy kids.

Since 2019, Terry Christians has been serving Albertans with dedication, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose. His journey into paramedicine began with a powerful moment—watching two paramedics gently care for his grandmother in an extended care facility. Their kindness and ability to bring comfort through conversation left a lasting impression. ā€œTheir illness was just being lonely,ā€ he recalls. That experience shaped his commitment to being present and compassionate, especially for those who need more than just clinical care.

Terry sees paramedicine as a privilege—being welcomed into people’s lives during their most vulnerable and meaningful moments. Whether it's during tragedy or the birth of new life, he’s proud to support both patients and their families through it all.

He reflects on moments like the Columbia Icefields disaster, where first responders from across Alberta came together to provide lifesaving care and later leaned on each other for support. It’s a reminder, he says, that paramedicine is more than a job—it’s a brotherhood and sisterhood built on compassion, trust, and resilience.

It’s Paramedic Services Week, and today we’re sharing a story of compassion and innovation — our paramedics have introduced dementia kits on ambulances to help patients living with dementia feel more comfortable and calm during emergency responses.

These kits, filled with items like fidget toys, coloring books, and puzzles, help reduce anxiety and make a real difference in the care paramedics provide. It’s a small but powerful way to show that our paramedics go above and beyond to support every patient with heart and care.

We’re so proud of our teams who always find new ways to care for those in need. Please join us in thanking them for their tireless dedication!
