In 2006, a shocking discovery was made beneath an old gas station in Saskatoon, Canada — the skeletal remains of a woman hidden inside a wooden barrel, buried deep in an abandoned well. Wrapped in burlap and dressed in early 1900s clothing, she became known only as “The Woman in the Well.”

For nearly a century, her identity was lost to time. Investigators tried everything — facial reconstructions, DNA testing, public appeals — but no one came forward.

Then, in 2023, science finally caught up with history. Using forensic genetic genealogy and advanced DNA sequencing, experts traced her DNA to living relatives and uncovered her name: Alice Spence (born Alice Burke, 1881).

Alice had moved from St. Louis, Minnesota, to Sutherland in 1913 with her husband and daughter. By 1918, she had mysteriously vanished — and no one ever knew what happened.

After 100 years buried in silence, Alice finally has her name back.
Her story is a reminder: truth may sleep, but it never dies.

Many Scottish families - but not all! - followed a traditional naming pattern, well into the 19th century at least.

Knowing about the pattern won’t always help you to identify entries you’re looking for, but it can still be very helpful, particularly with older records.
