Quintessential Journeys, End of Life Doula

My name is Sarah VanReenen and I have been trained as an End of Life Doula at the Institute of Traditional Medicine in Toronto, Ontario. I have been working off and on as a Health Care Aide/PSW for 10 yrs in Long Term Care Homes, Retirement Homes and Home Care.

I have a passion to see those who are at the end of their lives and their families feel like they have choices, support and help them envision how they see their last days through legacy. I feel it’s important to talk about our fears, desires for our loved ones and create a space that brings us comfort and healing in our last days and moments.

As an End of Life Doula I am lovingly providing support to those who are on the dying journey and their families before, during and after death occurs. The End of Life Doula approach is a holistic, compassionate, hands-on, non-medical one, with the main focus on companionship.

My services include but are not limited to:

· Planning and talking about end of life wishes, such as, what the active dying atmosphere looks and feels like, who is present, facilitating and guiding in creating legacy projects for loved ones, talking about meaning and purpose, guided visualization to lesson impact of symptoms, forgiveness in relationships, spiritual distress and for a general sense of wellbeing. As well as, providing support and guidance through decision making regarding caring for the body after death and education on home funerals.

· Being present through vigil during the active dying stage if desired. Supporting loved ones by giving them respite and recognizing the signs of breakdown in the body so they are able to be present at time of death. Working within the framework of the end of life wishes as far as possible to keep the space as desired. Guiding the family with the washing and dressing of the body after death occurs if wanted and staying present as long as needed.

· Reprocessing and working on grief to help families process all of their feelings through the dying journey of their loved one. Looking over the legacy project, remembering and ending our time shared through ritual.
