NewBaby101 pg 32: Typically, baby will start a breastfeed enthusiastically gulping down the fast-flowing milk from the full breast. This first phase of a breastfeed may be completed in quite a short time, maybe 5 to10 minutes. Baby will appear fully satisfied and will often drop off to sleep ("milk drunk"). The milk taken during this first phase is likely to be high in wonderful nutrients and fluid, but has little fat content. Baby will sleep a short time, maybe 5-30 minutes, and then stir. He has partially digested the milk taken in the first phase and now "cues" to continue the breastfeed. If the breast baby fed from previously still feels quite heavy with milk it is advisable to return the baby to the same breast for the second phase of the feed. This milk is now likely to be higher in fat (however this is not visible). This creamier milk will be digested more slowly than the milk taken earlier, and helps baby feel comfortable and satisfied. He may even repeat this a third or fourth time at some feeds, when the second breast can be offered if needed.
At the next breastfeed you offer the breast which was fed from least, following baby's cues as before. This pattern ensures both breasts are well drained a number of times during each 24 hour period, enhancing the establishment of an ample breastmilk supply. Be flexible about feeding and trust baby's cues.

I see so much pressure on parents to feed by the clock, by volumes, or by apps that promise certainty. But babies don’t work like spreadsheets.

Babies are variable. Their cues change, their needs shift, and what works one day may not work the next. When parents are supported to watch their baby instead of the numbers, I often see confidence begin to grow.

Not because it becomes easy, but because the relationship starts to lead.

What helped you learn your baby’s hunger cues, or what still feels confusing about them?

Toddlers 4 & under should AVOID slushies.🚫🚫

Not because they’re “too fun,” but because they can actually be dangerous for small bodies.

Many slushies contain high levels of glycerol, a sugar alcohol used to keep them frozen and slushy. In young children, glycerol can overwhelm their developing systems and lead to what’s been referred to as glycerol intoxication.

When consumed in amounts that may seem small to adults, glycerol can cause headaches, vomiting, drowsiness, and dangerously low blood sugar in little kids. Their bodies don’t process it the same way older children and adults do, and because slushies are easy to drink quickly, the effects can happen fast.

This isn’t about banning fun or judging parents. It’s about choosing age-appropriate treats and understanding that toddlers aren’t just tiny adults.

Save slushies for older kids. Frozen fruit, smoothies, popsicles, or ice water are much safer options.

Cute cup.
Real risk.
Informed choices matter.
