Cancer can turn life upside down in an instant, as Tammy discovered when a planned girls' trip for her 50th birthday was replaced with doctor appointments and a breast cancer diagnosis. But instead of feeling overwhelmed, Tammy turned her diagnosis into a full-time “project.” She said “yes” to every available resource – nutrition, exercise, and crucially, clinical counselling.
Why did counselling make the biggest impact for Tammy? It gave her the confidence to navigate her treatment plan, reframe her perspective on cancer, and communicate more effectively with her doctors.

Can asking questions improve cancer outcomes? Research says yes. Studies have found that patients who participate in counselling are more likely to ask meaningful questions, communicate openly with their medical team, and adhere to treatment plans tailored to their needs.
For Tammy, a breast cancer survivor, counselling gave her the skills to more effectively engage with her doctors, seek second opinions, and fully understand her options. Her advice? “There are no dumb questions - ask as many times as you need; that’s courageous - be proud of it, you’re taking care of your health, and you are not bothering anyone.”

Did you know that early interventions like counselling can significantly improve the emotional and social dimensions of a cancer patient’s experience? Studies show that psycho-oncology counselling reduces anxiety, fosters resilience, and enhances patients' overall quality of life during treatment.
For Tammy, a breast cancer survivor, counselling did more than ease her worries—it empowered her to focus on improving what she could control: nutrition, exercise, and mindset. This ability to reframe her perspective meant that for Tammy, “it helped me see my future in a different way, slowing down, and appreciating every moment…” - a positive result that she carries forward into her life after cancer.
