Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a fascinating and eloquent way of describing and explaining our menstrual cycle:

🪶Phase 1: Blood Phase ~ Menstruation
In TCM, the first phase of your cycle is menstruation when your uterus sheds its uterine lining. This phase is dominated by an abundant movement of blood and qi.

🪶Phase 2: Yin Phase ~ Follicular Phase
In the follicular phase, yin and blood rises to support the thickening of the uterine lining and a new follicle in the ovaries.

🪶Phase 3: Yang Phase ~ Ovulation
At ovulation, yin reaches its peak and the cycle transitions to yang as the egg is released.

🪶Phase 4: Yang Phase continues ~ Luteal Phase
Yang continues to rise and helps proliferates the uterine lining to support potential pregnancy by what TCM terms as warming the womb.

By following the phases and supporting each phase with acupuncture and herbs, this will help optimize fertility.

🪶There are so many supplements to choose from these days especially when it comes to fertility. Here are a few of my favourites that I recommend regularly🪶:

The Basics:
🪶Prenatal Multivitamin - A good prenatal should be taken 3-6 months prior to trying to conceive.
🪶Probiotics - Probiotics replenish intestinal flora (healthy bacteria) and promote overall digestive and immune health (amongst many other health benefits).
🪶Vitamin D - For general overall health and immune function.
🪶Iron - Whole food easy to digest non-constipating iron supplements are key, especially for pregnant women diagnosed with iron deficiency.

Check out my full blog post on my website for more info on supplements for +30, PCOS, endometriosis, and thyroid issues.

🪶Another popular question I get is “when is the best time to come in for acupuncture for IVF support?” Of course the following recommendations are in an ideal situation where busy schedules are none existent but here is a good reference when thinking about acupuncture and IVF🪶:

🪶Pre-Retrieval Cycle: One month is typically adequate for other diagnoses like endometriosis, PCOS, etc. The three month window is recommended in cases of low ovarian reserve, poor egg or embryo quality.
🪶Retrieval Cycle: 2x/week leading up the retrieval day, these focus on augmenting follicle development to help support quality and quantity of eggs. Then once a week post retrieval to help with stress, side effects of hormone injections etc.
🪶Pre-transfer Cycle: 2x/week leading up the the transfer day, these treatments focus on reducing stress and preparing the uterus for implantation.
🪶Pre/Post Transfer DAY: Most often fertility clinics will have an acupuncturist on site that will give acupuncture treatments right before and right after an embryo transfer. Inquire if this is an option for you. Highly recommended!
🪶Post Transfer: Weekly treatments until pregnancy is confirmed. These treatments focus on emotional support, reducing stress, encouraging implementation, and warming the womb.
🪶Conception: Weekly treatments until 8 week scan confirms heart beat. These treatments focus on helping to maintain pregnancy, reducing stress, warming the womb, etc.

Wow, that’s a lot! But if you have any questions feel free to email me☺️

🪶Lately I have been getting a few inquiries about acupuncture and fertility, so I thought I would work on a series of informational post about acupuncture and how it can help people on their fertility journey🪶.

Here are a few reasons why people undergoing IVF should think about adding regular acupuncture treatments:

🪶Balances hormones: Acupuncture stimulates the endocrine system, which is responsible for producing and releasing hormones that affect ovulation, menstruation, and pregnancy.
🪶Increases blood flow: Acupuncture helps to increase blood circulation to the reproductive organs, especially the uterus and ovaries.
🪶Reduces stress: Acupuncture is known to reduce stress by stimulating the release of endorphins.
🪶Enhances IVF outcomes: Some studies have suggested that acupuncture performed before and after embryo transfer can increase the pregnancy rates of IVF patients.
🪶Supports overall wellness: Acupuncture can help you address other health issues that may affect your fertility indirectly, such as insomnia, digestive problems, allergies, or chronic pain.
🪶Promotes emotional well-being: Acupuncture can help you cope with these emotions by providing a safe and supportive space to express yourself and receive compassionate care.

Next post I am going to talk about IVF and acupuncture treatment timing so stay tuned!
